NEW YORK, Nov. 28, 2008 (Reuters) — A Wal-Mart employee in New York state's Long Island died on Friday when a throng of shoppers surged into the store and physically broke down the doors, a police spokesman said.

The 34-year-old man was at the entrance of the Valley Stream Walmart store when it opened at 5 a.m. local time and was knocked to the ground, the police report said.

The exact cause of death was still to be determined by a medical examiner.

Four shoppers, including a 28-year-old pregnant woman, were also taken to local hospitals for injuries sustained in the incident, police said.

The Friday after America's Thanksgiving holiday is known as Black Friday and marks what is traditionally the busiest retail day of the year, kicking off the Christmas shopping season.

U.S. stores across the country opened in the early hours of Friday to offer discounts to consumers hit by a contracting economy. Hundreds of shoppers waited on line before dawn at some locations to secure deals on holiday gifts.

Representatives at Wal-Mart, the world's largest retailer, were not immediately available for comment.

I was just reading this article. I recall several years ago a person being trampled at a Walmart in Florida on Black Friday. This whole Christmas shopping season has gotten way out of hand. These stores won't offer the same sales on line which is ridiculous. I'm so saddened by this story. As the economy continues to spiral there will be many in this world who believe we are getting our come-uppance and when a perosn is trampled to death in the name of a great deal well....

It's truly pathetic!
This rush has never made sense to me at all.
Nothing on God's green earth would make me want to be the first in line, or the first to grab a bargain amidst a bunch of emotionally charged, savin'- me a- dollar- minded idiots.
Cripes, my sister was just telling me how wild it was at Toys R Us this morning, when she and a friend went to buy for their grand kids.:smileywac

Kinda makes the fights over the Cabbage Patch Kids dolls seem pretty mild, eh?
Whatever happened to the days of fun hustle and bustle during the holiday season?
Now it's every man/woman for yourself, asses and elbows to rush in the door to get that almighty buy, by golly!
Oh wait, I forgot.. the times they are a changin'...

NY Wal-Mart worker trampled to death by shoppers

NEW YORK (AP) _ A worker died after being trampled by a throng of unruly shoppers when a suburban Wal-Mart opened for the holiday sales rush Friday, authorities said.

At least three other people were injured.

Wal-Mart Stores Inc., in Bentonville, Ark., would not confirm the reports of a stampede but said a "medical emergency" had caused the company to close the store, which is in Valley Stream on Long Island.

Nassau County police said the 34-year-old worker was taken to a hospital where he was pronounced dead at about 6 a.m., an hour after the store opened. The cause of death was not immediately known.

A police statement said shortly after 5 a.m., a throng of shoppers "physically broke down the doors, knocking (the worker) to the ground." Police also said a 28-year-old pregnant woman was taken to a hospital for observation and three other shoppers suffered minor injuries and were also taken to hospitals.

The dead worker's name was not released.

"Local authorities are looking into the situation," said Wal-Mart representative Dan Fogleman. But he said it would be "inappropriate for me to share any additional information" until authorities investigate further.

Shoppers around the country lined up early outside stores in the annual bargain hunting ritual known as Black Friday. Many stores open early and stay open late. The Valley Stream Wal-Mart usually opens at 9 a.m.

Another reason I prefer online shopping. Sure can't do it for everything, but many of the 'good deals' can be had from the comfort of your home. :thumb: :D

People are crazy this time of year, but this is over the top. wonder if the store will open on Saturday, business as usual...........except someone will have to work the guys schedule.

there is equal blame here, the stores promote this, the media named it black friday, and the people follow. take some sense people, show up at 8, when they pay a full staff to do NOTHING, things will change

Gone But Not Forgotten
On The Today Show or some show I was watching people had barracaded their way into the Best Buy out easy. Bought everything they could that was on sale and then took it out into the parking lot and resold it for a profit.

And then there is the stores that advertise this big special but has no inventory. It was a gimmick to get people in. I have a friend that went to two stores this morning was the first of about ten people to get in the the store was already out of the advertised price. That is why I have become a fricken grinch during the holidays. Just ask my wife.

and these are some of the reasons why I tend to buy small items on sale throughout the year - and give them at whim, or make holiday gifts from a handful of purchased stock parts and whatever raw materials I have at hand when i have the time and inclination to make son sawdust/metal filings. (for example, one year I bought alarm clock mechanisms and made a dozen clocks for gifts.)

Gift cards! bought throughout the year, or spur of the moment...
The other day I had lunch at Red Lobster and got Mom a $20 card, my son Jeff and his family a $50 one, then when I went to Menard's and bought new lights for the tree, I got Ty a gift card, then went by the mall and got his wife Aimee a gift card from Bath and Body.
The grand kids all get gifts sent in packages with candy this year.
I got my sister a boat load of pink ribbon gifts for cancer awareness-her hubby Russ said he didn't want anything (but he's getting something-what, I don't know yet).. it's easier to just buy as you go, or wait last minute and do it then IMO.
I don't have much more shopping to do really, but always think of something else someone would like.
Since all my family are going to be scattered during Christmas, going either to southern Ohio- Indiana or Florida, we won't have a get-together this year. :(
I have to work Christmas day anyhow.. but have Christmas Eve off.
Suppose me and Gretch will watch movies and snuggle under bankies and make the best of it.

My wife and I did that this year. Frankly, I'm glad we did. She'll be re-couping, and my heart isn't into anything. I figure we'll do a dinner (that no one really wants to eat) we'll be polite and then hit the Interstate.

I'm encouraging my wife to recoup in Florida with her best friend. She might not even be here near Christmas. I never cared for the holiday anyway, so it's no loss for me.
