What GREASE for a snowcat ??

Hi all,

I searched and didn't really find a good discussion.

Well, I'm getting ready to go through my "new" cat and hit all the grease points. The question is what grease? I don't know what was used in the past and it appears that several types are present. Some is that really goey stuff that the pressure washer won't even blow off. I have ususlly used a marine grease from West Marine in my 4x4s.

What do you use and why?

I did take some advice from here (I think) and picked up a 14v Lincoln cordless grease gun.... should make life easier.... mmmmm... Tools...

Oh, my cat is a Tucker 1342 with belted steel tracks so I don't have it as bad as you steel track guys.

Thanks for any advise,

Vance

I strickly use Amsoil racing grease. Its simply the best. Any good full synthetic grease should be fine but Amsoil is currently the best. Remember to always grease every fitting when you get done snowcatten. You will actually see the new grease push out water from the bearings that accumulates after each run!

SO,

Thanks for the tip on the Amsoil. Lots of peep have good things to say about those products but I haven't used them. Do you buy local (my NAPA has it) or do you have a favorite mail order vendor?

thanks,

Vance

P.S. I'm getting worried.... that Snowmaster is really wearing on me... I want one....Help me...I might be becoming a snowcat addict!!

Its addicting. As far as the Amsoil get it wherever you can. I just see my distributor in Las Vegas when I am down there.

Why do you choose the Racing Grease vs. the Water Resistant? Looks like the water stuff is more suited to our application.

I'll see what they stock at Napa - helps to have an available supply.

Here is some info from Amsoil:

AMSOIL synthetic extreme pressure lithium complex greases offer outstanding protection and extended service lives.

Load-bearing and extreme pressure protection - AMSOIL synthetic extreme pressure lithium complex greases offer outstanding protection in high load and extreme pressure operations, due to the great film strength of synthetic basestocks, the mechanical stability of lithium complex thickeners and the protective shield provided by extreme pressure agents.

Friction-reduction - AMSOIL synthetic extreme pressure lithium complex greases' low coefficient of friction helps keep wear rates low and efficiency high by minimizing friction.

High and low temperature performance - Outstanding thermal and oxidative stability allow AMSOIL synthetic greases to protect in higher temperatures than conventional greases can without breaking down or forming deposits. Outstanding cold temperature pumpability allows them to protect in lower temperatures than conventional greases do.

More - Excellent washout resistance and corrosion inhibition offer outstanding protection in wet applications or for stored equipment.

AMSOIL Series 2000 Synthetic Racing Grease

AMSOIL Series 2000 Synthetic Racing Grease is an extreme-pressure multi-purpose grease formulated for high-temperature/high-speed applications, such as racing. Yet, its outstanding load-bearing capacity suits it for use in low-speed, high-load bearings, a job usually reserved for heavy-duty greases. Components get the load-bearing capcity of a heavy-duty grease without sacrificing the high-temperature protection of a multi-purpose.

AMSOIL Series 2000 Synthetic Racing Grease offers outstanding wear protection. It passes the Ford Film Strength Endurance Test with a 16-point margin. Most non-solid fortified greases cannot pass this challenging wear protection test.

AMSOIL Series 2000 Synthetic Racing Grease offers excellent protection in low temperatures and high temperatures. It maintains outstanding low temperature pumpability and high temperature consistency. It is highly resistant to thermal and oxidative breakdown, which 1keeps components running clean and protected. It offers excellent water washout resistance and rust and corrosion inhibition.

AMSOIL Series 2000 Synthetic Racing Grease offers extended service life and extended shelf life.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Synthetic Heavy Duty Greases

AMSOIL Synthetic Heavy Duty Greases are moly-fortified greases formulated for low-speed high-load applications. They provide dependable performance in extreme pressure conditions.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Synthetic Multi-Purpose Greases

AMSOIL Synthetic Multi-Purpose Greases are formulated for high-speed/high temperature service. Their outstanding thermal and oxidative stability inhibits deposit formation and grease breakdown in high temperature applications. Their superior friction reducing ability helps keep high-speed components operating in their optimal temperature range and helps keep them running clean.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Synthetic Water Resistant Lithium Complex Grease

Synthetic Water Resistant Lithium Complex Grease is formulated for utmost protection against water. Its outstanding resistance to washoff and anti-rust/anti-corrosion activity make it the preferred grease for components subjected to frequent or prolonged water contact. NLGI consistency grade #1-1/2. May replace NLGI #1 or #2 greases.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

AMSOIL greases provide superior protection and friction reduction under both normal and severe operating conditions. The AMSOIL greases can be counted on to remain in the places that they are needed and to provide stable overall lubrication in even the most severe service conditions. Tests prove once again that AMSOIL greases are the best way to protect and prolong the life of industrial and automotive equipment.

Greater Load Carrying Ability
Added Wear Protection

Hi Vance,
It really doesnt matter which synthetic Amsoil grease you use. Remember after each trip in the field (snow) you grease every zirk fitting. I am not sure why I chose the racing grease. But it works great!. Also it is white and it lets me see when I have fresh grease starting to come out the bearings.

I recomend the Blue, Boat wheel Bearing grease because of it's water repellant qualities. So does Bill Guthrie the snow cat dealer in Idahoe, and Ron Hoffman and Earl Lasher. 4 Votes for Blue Boat Stuff.
