Looks like the citizens of Egypt have a new Independence Day.
A bit over a year ago the Muslim Brotherhood overthrew a dictator, albeit it a fairly benign dictator. Then 1 year ago, almost to the day, the Muslim Brotherhood took formal control of the Egyptian government through a legitimate election.
As they consolidated their power the nation began taking a turn, it grew from a generally peaceful nation with multiple cultures coexistiing (non-religious, Coptic Christians, Muslims and even some Jews) into a secular Muslim nation that began taking hardline positions on all non-Muslims. The economy collapsed. Instability rocked the region. Terrorism against non-Muslims runs rampant with murder of priests and Christians becoming all too common. Violence against women, including public rape and sexual assault, a daily activity.
The US, foolishly backed the new government.
Now there is backlash. In what have been described as the largest political potests in the history of the world, the military has ousted the Muslim Brotherhood.
Historically the military leaders have been quasi-allies of the US and the West. We can only hope this relationship has not been too strained over the past 18 months as Obama/Clinton's foreign relations failures may have totally alienated them?
