It says a 1957 Thiokol, I'm not sure about year or make. The plate looks like it says 1947 and it looks more like a Frandee. For sure its a project.

Ironically I met the seller last night (No affiliation).

He said it's virtually all there; and missing some windows and IIRC, a door handle/latch. He acquired it and had plans to finish the project, but decided to move on. He's hoping a buyer will finish what was started...

The engine has been repainted and it was represented to him that it had been rebuilt. The tracks need work.

Can anyone identify exactly what model this machine is?

Hard to tell just what it is !!! frandee looking cab,but some type of rear drive like a thiokol. The frandee relied on two regular automotive differentials front and rear with just rubber tires for driving the tracks. A better picture of the differential area might tell the story. looks like a decent project for someone !!:smile:

That’s a VL differential so probably a 4VL

We had to custom make some differential parts for a sheriffs department from Wyoming some years back.one of the deputies brought the differential from Wyoming and stayed overnight while we machined the parts and reassembled the differential, and then he drove it back to Wyoming. The machine was their search and rescue machine

That is correct, that would be a cousin of a Frandee I guess, or one of the first of Thiokol's production.

Purchased this unit today, I believe it is an early Thiokol Trackmaster 4VL, I think they made different versions of this model. Let me know if I am wrong. Tag says date 1957 and serial number 103, model number 14672000103. It has a small 4 cylinder engine, that like all the other snowcats I have bought is seized up, transmission is also stuck in neutral. This is a future restoration project, so it will sit for awhile, need to finish the Tucker 542 Cab Forward first. Anyway I am going to need parts if anyone has any or knows of anyone that may have some. Not sure what I will need yet, but I will surely need something.

Nice project!
After seeing your Frandee restoration I am sure you will do well with this one!
That engine looks like the overhead valve 4 cylinders that the Jeeps started using in the 1950s.
With this project having set for so long perhaps condensation has rusted a top ring to one of the cylinder walls.
Hopefully, a little soaking with penetrate will free up the works.

I will try the penetrating oil, it is obvious the engine was out of the unit and I would guess at least a bearing and ring replacement. I will probably do a complete teardown and rebuild for couple reasons. First I enjoy that type of work and second, when I am 10 or 15 mile back in the mountains all by myself I like to have some confidence that the engine will not konk out on me. Now it still could, but I like to have a bit of reliability, and once you pass that it is snow shoe time.

I got the tracks pinned back together this morning so I can store it as a "complete" unit until I have time to work on it.

Thanks for the info on the engine, I will look into it.

Once I start working on it I will start a new thread for the restoration.

Here is the Jeep F- head engine in a M38-A1 military application. Intake valves are overhead, exhaust in block.

must be the orange, but I really like the proportions of the front view.

combination Clutch brake type drive.

I think you are way above project status......
