Snow Tracs on a show - Alaska Moose Men debuts on Animal Planet

Hello everybody,

Gary here with the Alaska Moose Federation. We now have a show called Alaska Moose Men that will debut on Animal Planet on Thursday February 6th.
Men For Moose flier #01.jpg
The show will document the Alaska Moose Federation and our amazing volunteer's efforts to reduce moose collisions on Alaska's highways while promoting moose abundance safely away from our cities and transportation corridors.

One of the projects we've been working on this winter is a emergency food relief effort for the Village of Galena on the Yukon River. An ice jam flooded 90% of the village where they lost 17 tons of traditional food. Alaska Fish & Game asked us to divert some of our salvage moose that was flown out in December. We hope to transport about 7 tons of moose meat to the village before winter is up.

The back drop of all our interviews are a couple of our Snow Tracs with moose horns on the hood. :brows:

The 'Hero Shot' of all our guys on the show is in front of Moose Force One. This sticker has always been a tribute to military personnel who we are eternally grateful for. Our Tucker 2000 will be out making diversionary trails for moose while being a base for dropping birch trees that provide fresh browse for moose away from the highways.
Wild Mike's ST4.jpg
Wild Mike is one of our main guys. This is his personal Snow Trac. Sorry, I can't remember his rig's number but it sure is good runner out in the woods working with the Tucker and the snow machines. Critter is his side kick and he, of course, has a Snow Trac too. Are you catching a trend? :cool2:

A main component of the show is our rescuing, rearing and releasing of orphaned moose calves. This picture is one of our trucks and relocation trailer with the calves arriving in Cordova, Alaska. The babies had been traveling for 5 hours by this time. That was a big combo stuffing into a smaller style ferry. :ermm:

Here is where the 3 orphans were released in August, 2013, back to the wild. This was the first day Animal Planet filmed us so they documented something that had not been done in 54 years. These calves were released to the Copper River Delta which has an amazing moose herd. This herd was created in the 1950's when 24 orphans were flown down from Anchorage to Cordova in surplus WWII aircraft. There were no moose on the delta before then. Since 1960, this herd has provided over 5,000 moose mostly for the local village of Eyak and community of Cordova. These calves, along with orphans for the next 3 or so years, will provide more genetics into this population that was created with few moose to start with.

Our chairman, who is an Alaskan Native elder, actually bottle fed the moose calves in the 1950's. Pretty amazing!

Here are 2 of the calves in January enjoying their new world growing up into adult moose. The third calf's collar malfunctioned so there is no finding that calf.

I hope everyone has a chance to see the show during its many airings in February. The producer is already asking for stories for a 80 day filming schedule from April - June so we'll see how it plays out. This is a non-profit organization that is working every day because if you're helping moose, you're helping people! One thing you can guarantee is Snow Tracs will be all over the place in this show and we all know the real stars of this show are the moose and the state of Alaska. Hope you make this your cause! Enjoy!!!
