I found this editiorial in the Las Vegas newspaper pretty interesting. Basically the liberal wing of the local Democratic party cancelled a Presidential debate rather than allowing Fox News to be a co-sponsor for the debate. Apparently the local Democrats don't want presidential canditates debating on Fox?

Network co-sponsors state Democratic debate -- oh my!

Hard-core liberals can't stand the Fox News Channel. Passing a television that's tuned to the conservative favorite forces many of them to close their eyes, cover their ears and scream, "La la la la la la la la la!" Then they dash to their computers and fire off 2,500 e-mails condemning the outlet, none of which are ever read.

But liberals' aversion to Fox News has finally gone over the top. The Nevada Democratic Party had agreed to let the right-tilting network co-sponsor, of all things, an August debate in Reno between Democratic presidential candidates. Party officials were serious about drawing national attention to the state's January presidential caucus, the country's second in the 2008 nominating process.

Interestingly, the Democratic Party Website in Nevada still has this posted on their site (at least it is up on the site as of Saturday night)

FOX News to Host August 2007 Democratic Debate in Reno

http://www.nvdems.com/news.php?newsid=754

RENO, NEVADA AND NEW YORK - FOX News, the Nevada Democratic Party and the Western Majority Project have jointly announced that they will host a 2008 presidential debate, which is expected to attract the top Democratic contenders for President. The debate will be presented live on FOX News Channel (FNC) and FOX News Radio on August 14, 2007 in Reno.

In making the announcement, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-NV) said, “This is more great news for Nevada. I'm happy FOX News will be a partner for the August presidential debate. Western issues will be a major focus of this debate in particular. With FOX News as our partner, candidates will have an opportunity to not only speak to Nevada voters, but voters across the West who will be instrumental to electing a Democratic president in 2008.”

FOX News Chairman and CEO Roger Ailes added, “FOX News is proud to be a leader in coverage of the 2008 campaign season and a co-host of this important presidential debate. We look forward to working with the Nevada Democratic Party and the Western Majority Project.”

The Western Majority Project (WMP), another cosponsor of the FOX debate, is a federally registered political action committee. WMP was recently founded to build upon the growing political strength of the West by injecting Western issues into the national dialogue and highlight the common sense, forward looking, independent values of Western voters. WMP’s advisory council includes co-chairs Arizona Governor Janet Napolitano and Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-NV, as well as Senators Ken Salazar, Colorado; Max Baucus, Montana; Jon Tester, Montana; and Jeff Bingaman, New Mexico and Governors Bill Ritter, Colorado; Brian Schweitzer, Montana; Bill Richardson, New Mexico.

“Westerners appreciate straight talk and someone who will fight for their values. This debate will provide an enormous opportunity for these candidates to demonstrate the independent, common sense and forward-looking leadership that westerners expect in the next president,” said Arizona Governor Janet Napolitano.

Seems to me that the Democrats in Nevada have no clue what they are doing. :fart2:

Dems Dump Fox: Obama Comments "Went Too Far"

The Huffington Post | Melinda Henneberger | Posted March 9, 2007 05:32 PM

The Nevada Democratic Party today backed out of a FOX News-sponsored presidential debate after Fox President Roger Ailes's recent remarks jokingly comparing Democratic Senator Barack Obama to al Qaeda leader Osama Bin Laden.
In a joint letter faxed today, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid and Tom Collins, the head of the Nevada Democratic Party, informed Fox News executive producer Marty Ryan of the decision.

"A month ago, the Nevada Democratic Party entered into a good faith agreement with FOX News to co-sponsor a presidential debate in August,'' Reid and Collins said in the letter. "This was done because the Nevada Democratic Party is reaching out to new voters and we strongly believe that a Democrat will not win Nevada unless we find new ways to talk to new people. To say the least, this was not a popular decision. But it is one that the Democratic Party stood by.''

"However, comments made last night by FOX News President Roger Ailes in reference to one of our presidential candidates went too far,'' the letter went on. "We cannot, as good Democrats, put our party in a position to defend such comments. In light of his comments, we have concluded that it is not possible to hold a Presidential debate that will focus on our candidates and are therefore canceling our August debate. We take no pleasure in this, but it is the only course of action.''

A spokeswoman for FOX did not return calls seeking comment.

Democratic presidential candidate John Edwards had already announced that he would not participate in the Fox debate. His party was under pressure from the more than 265,000 people who signed a petition calling Fox "a mouthpiece for the Republican Party, not a legitimate news channel" and urging Nevada officials to cancel.

Danny Coyle, a MoveOn.org member who serves on the Executive Board of the Carson City Democratic Central Committee, yesterday offered a resolution calling on the state party to drop Fox, and it passed overwhelmingly among the grassroots Democrats in attendance.

"I am glad and relieved that the Nevada Democratic leadership has come to its senses," Coyle said in a statement. "Any kind of relationship with Fox is bad for the party."

Initially, Senator Reid had defended the decision to work with Fox, reasoning that it might help Democratic candidates reach out to right-leaning Fox viewers. But party activists argued from the start that any connection with Fox was a mistake.

Robert Greenwald, director of the movie /Outfoxed/, called the move a "victory for truth and journalism." Some 280,000 people have viewed Greenwald's new YouTube film "Fox Attacks: Obama" - located with the petition at www.FoxAttacks.com. "By standing up to Fox's right-wing smears," Greenwald said, "the patriotic grassroots, Netroots, Senator Reid, Senator Edwards, and the Nevada Democrats have all worked together to protect one of the most important elements of a free society - the press."

And Eli Pariser, Executive Director of MoveOn.org Civic Action, said he hoped the decision would "set a precedent within the party that Fox should be treated as a right-wing mis-information network, not legitimized as a neutral source of news."

And so if Fox is to be treated as a source of mis-information by the Democrats, then should the Republicans treat ABC, CBS, CNN, NBC, NPR, and PBS in the same manner?

Further, if the whole point of teaming up with FOX was to expand the appeal of the Democratic party to FOX's viewers, then is the party now saying that they are giving up on that demographic?

Also, while Roger Ailes is the chief of the network, is he not allowed his editorial views? Afterall, most of the mainstream press other than FOX has editorials as well and some have painted Republican candiates and politicians as modern day quazi nazis. So is this message from the Democratic party to say that networks are not allowed to have opinions or is this just to admit that most of the mainstream media is sympathetic to the Democrats and the party should just support them because they provide support from them?

Apparently he realized that even straight talk would get twisted to sound like that nonsense above. Why enrich Faux News when all they will do is ridicule you.

We need to get beyond that sort of political 'commentary'. Only the idiots enjoy it. And it sure doesn't shed any light on issues that need to see the light of day.

I agree, but if we do that, CNN is out of business.

California, just to be very clear, it was NOT anyone at FOX NEWS who wrote that above passage. In fact that passage was not the reason that the Democratic party pulled the debate from FOX.

That passage was written in The Las Vegas Review-Journal by a newspaper editor IN RESPONSE to the actions of the Democrats. It was written after the Democrats pulled their co-sponsorship of the event and went away seeking a supportive network; just like an upset child who picks up his toys and runs back home to mommy.

Bob - you are giving them too much credit.

It's just another example of the polarization of politics. It will get worse before it gets better - if it ever gets better.
