How can someone stab 29 pigs and not remember doing it?

FAIRMONT - A 23-year-old Winnebago man faces charges of third-degree burglary and second-degree torture/cruelty to animals after allegedly stabbing 29 pigs in a Wiechman Pig barn south of Truman last week.

According to information from the Martin County Sheriff's Office:

Shortly after 3:30 a.m. April 27, a caller reported a suspicious person in the Wiechman Pigs hog barn. When a deputy arrived, a man there told him the suspect - later identified as Curtis Lee Adams - had opened the gates and gone into the hog barn and asked for help getting his truck out because he was stuck. Adams said he had been at a bar and thought he turned down a gravel road, but got lost.

When the deputy made contact with Adams, Adams said he did not know how he got into the hog barn. The deputy noticed Adams had blood on his knuckles and smelled of pigs and pig manure.

Sobriety tests were performed and a breath test showed Adams' blood-alcohol content was more than the legal limit. He was taken to the law enforcement center, and later released to a sober driver.

A search of Adams' truck turned up a .22-caliber rifle that was not properly cased.

Shortly before 8 a.m., Wiechman Pigs reported that several of its hogs had been cut or stabbed. Adams also was back at the hog barn, attempting to get his truck back.

When a deputy asked Adams about stabbing the pigs, he said he couldn't remember anything. He claimed he remembered drinking at a bar in Northrop and going to sleep in his truck, then talking to police.

A knife Adams identified as his was found in the grass outside the hog barn. Adams had not changed his clothes or shoes, which were covered in dried blood, and he was photographed by police.

A truck driver who had been at the hog barn around 3 a.m. was able to pick out Adams as a person he saw there. The truck driver said he noticed pigs were out of their pens, which was unusual, but he believed Adams was a new employee at the barn.

The 29 pigs that were stabbed had to be euthanized. Total damage to the barn and pigs is around $7,800.

Adams faces charges of third-degree burglary and first-degree criminal damage to property; each charge carries a maximum penalty of five years in prison and a $10,000 fine.

The charge of second-degree torture/cruelty to animals is a gross misdemeanor, with a maximum penalty of a year in jail and a $3,000 fine.

Adams also faces misdemeanor charges of driving while impaired; and illegal transport of a firearm in a motor vehicle.
