Fixing 1971 Bombardier Muskeg

MuskegNorway

New member
Hi yall! I am a Norwegian that are currently starting to fix 1 of 3 Muskeg carriers that i am in possesion of :) ( you might think, what would Canadian Muskeg`s do that far overseas? well, in the 60s-90s they were very populear machines for the power industry, related to the construction of powerlines, and construction in rural areas)

I will post some pics of whats going on here,

Info about the machine : 1971 Bombardier Muskeg carrier, it has a crane and Swedish sepson 3/6 Ton winch. Engine : Perkins A4.236

issues : Tracks are very worn and in need of replacement, engine does not crank, starter broken, dynamo broken, 1 fuel injetor broken inside the engine head, in general porr condition ( currently in negotiations of aquiring a perkins T4.263 engine )

More info : the poor Muskeg had been stuck in the same place for atleast 10 yers + when i bought it, so everything needs a checkup

questions :

I do have hydraulics on the machine, and I would very much like to swap out my manual steering levers, and replace them with hydraulic steering instead, info on this, anyone ?

Gee whiz, are you sure that machine needs any work done to it???

I'm about 1/4 Norwegian if that counts as anything and grew up in a little town call Lake Norden, which I'm told means north in Norwegian.

I can't help your with your machine but it is nice to have you here with us....

Hi! :) nice to hear that there are more "Norwegians" out there
"Norden" means "the north" in my language, so you are correct

nice to hear that :)

Btw: The machine, yea i know it`s in dire straits and could really need "a hand". however as far as cosmetics go, i have a sandblasting& painting company so that bit will be covered with ease, but with reegards to the technical state of the machine, now thats another story:yum:

I was told the Norwegians and maybe the Danes were the 1st emigrants in that area and the Norgs named that little glacial lake, Lake Nordern. Ironically, I'm Norwegian, Danish, Swedish and do enjoy lutefisk on occasion. Oh and we make lefsa too. Love that stuff.

So nice to hear that alryA, quite interesting indeed, i know many Norwegians emigrated back when our country was poor and jobs hard to come by. I even have a aunt, uncle and 3 cousins in Richmond missouri:smile: . I enjoy Lefse a lot aswell together with a cup of coffee, may I suggest you also try some : "pinnekjøtt" or "fårikål" aswell sometime? And of course homesmoked salmon or trout, gotta love it!

Having fabbed up power steering for my yellow muskeg it works fine, but I still like the mechanical levers. I like feel of the levers when turning , hyd steering doesn't have that , mostly notice this when in tight turns in the bush , on the trail not so much. Just my opinion.

Hi, Thanks for your reply, I have also heard some other Muskeg owners tell me the same thing regarding the hyd steering. However I am quite interested in acquiring such a type hyd steering, I am also trying to plan on how to build that system, However I am a little stuck on the Cylinder part, because i would probably need a cylinder that would retract fast into normal position after use, any thoughts on that? Or maby there exits som good drawings from the original hyd system?

If you do a search on this site, Muskeg Hull Rebuild and Muskeg Steering , threads will come up, with lots of info. I'll post a pic of the manual hyd flow chart , basically your lever is blocking the return, causing the cylinder to apply fast. Generic cylinders like I used require a fairly strong return spring, something I had to change after testing, other than that, I had no problems. Dialing in the pressure to suit the weight of the vehicle was the last step.

I used the original power steering pump that came on the ISUZU diesel engine I installed. The pump is only for the steering, with a separate relief and flow valve to get the pressure and flow where I want it.

Mine had the power steering pump that would have gone with a truck using the same gas engine. I wanted a bigger pump for a hydraulic winch and used a pressure reducing valve to lessen the pressure to the steering system.

We stopped by the fish market and caught a photo of there smoker. Pretty simple setup. I believe the top shelves are white and trout on the lower ones. We were there to pick up 20lbs of white for the father-in-law! He cans the stuff. We just grill it.

Must say, it is nice to live by a fish market... If any of you characters get up our way, just let us know and we'll grill you some.

Give me some time so check that food out. To see us outdoors here, go to our dogs blog. http://trailmuttreports.blogspot.com/

This is where we purchase our fish. They peterson's are the fishing family.
