They did that in the late 70's too. You could buy a stock car, set for either dirt or asphalt. It was offered in various levels or form, from a roller chassis to turn-key.

Paint's optional, hence the "body in white". It is just sealed to prevent rust; the sealer is white.

Chevy an Ford offered the Camaro and Mustang as a body in white for a while. Some of the SCCA A-Sedan guys were using them.

Isn't that like cheating. Just ordering your hot rod ready made. Where's the fun in that? :huh:
