Jealous of Unix

This was posted by a girl on a Norwegian forum. It was originally posted in Norwegian, but a fellow admin translated. Too funny:

For those who don't know, Unix is the operating system Linux and Dos were based on when they were originally created. Unix has been around since 1970 and was created by Bell Labs.

Jealous of Unix, and I don't even know who she is!!!

I have many relationships behind be with unfaithful ex'es + bad self esteem. You will probably think I am stupid when writing this, but I cannot ask him about it because I am so jealous.

The thing is, my new boyfriend has bought a new T-shirt where it says “UNIX is sexy” and he wears it all the time.
I don't know who she is and I dare not ask him either... Does anyone of you know? Is she a porn star? It sounds like it by the name, like Xena or something.

Should I talk to him because I don't like him apparently cheering for porn stars while I'm sitting home with bad self esteem.

Naw, she's not like that. You're thinking of Xenix...she's a cheap so-n-so.

yeah, well, I put Unix on my laptop the other day and now my microsoft won't boot. Don't think it's an incompatibility problem, more like sharing - but will take more hands on work to get it up and running. (I know, not really Unix - more like Linux, Ubuntu to be specific - apparently partitioning the drive was not a happy experience and now I need to find my restore disks)

Normally I'll partition the drive, load windows then load Linux to a predefined partition. I bet you will need your restore disks now.

Good point PB. VMware is good and Xen is another option. Both are easy to work with. Much better than the dual booting option.

A couple of years ago, during the middle of my retraining provided by our good friends at NAFTA, I signed up for a class in Linux operating systems but it concentrated on SUSE Linux primarily.

I attempted a duel boot set up on my HP laptop, which turned out to be a disaster. I learned a lot but I am still am a little cloudy on the Open Source systems. I think this is from Microsoft being drilled into everyone’s head.

I’m new to this forum but I find cruising the posts helps to lift the veil of confusion just a bit.

Ok, here's the confusing part of the deal - after trying to let windows repair itself loading 3 times and having it fail, I shut down the machine and walked away for a couple of days while finding my disks.
Upon digging them out I booted one last time before using them to format the entire drive -- and it loaded without any problems.
apparently it wanted a complete shutdown to finish the repair process, not just the reboot it kept doing...

now if i could just get the Ubuntu to see my moden, life would be grand... (scanModem is not working for me - which I'm relatively certain is an ID - ten - T error... :ermm:

When I first switched to Linux, I used a dual-boot setup also. But it seemed that whichever one I booted, I aways soon wanted to use something on the other partition or OS. It was an exercise in frustration.

A lot of this thread seems to have scrolled off the top, so I can't see what you are replying to. But I currently use VirtualBox software under Linux to run WindowsXP. You can also do it the other way, running Linux under Windows.

VirtualBox is a direct competitor to VMWare, but it has two advantages. One, you can use it for free--including a full version that lets you create new virtual machines. Two, it works better than VMWare. I bought VMWare and used it for years but got very tired of it not compiling whenever I upgraded my host machine's kernel.

Redhat is going to KVM for it's virtual software. I'm not sold on KVM & I hate the name since KVM is used to describe Keyboard Video Mouse setups also.

Zen is another competitor to VMware. Zen works as well or better than VMware IMHO.

I'll have to try out VirtualBox sometime.
