This thing is just way too cool. I don't know how to post it here but it's in military vehicles. If only Nome was in Colorado...

M76 Otter Military Track Vehicle Vehicle Description
The Item you are bidding on is a 1953 M76 Otter. And not pictured is an identical spare for parts that comes with it. The otter has a hoizontally opposed for cylinder continenal gasoline powered engine, and an automatic transmission. The alluminum body is in excellent shape with very little corrosion. I purchased the vehichle in 1998 and have used it for camping trips, parades, and recovery of other stuck vehicles. I have all original maint. manuals for this rig as well as other tech data for it and mag. publications with pictures of other M76's in service. This is an excellent coolectors peice as well as a functional machine. This rig was amphibious in its day, the pto drive for the propeller still works though I have never put a propeller on it nor do I have one for it.
-The very few mechanical problems. The tracks are all rubber belting with sreel cleets. One track was built in the mid 80's and is still in good shape, the other is original and has some serious dry rot. If the rig were to be used as a work machine hauling heavy loads I would recomend building one new track to replace the rotted one. For a parade machine or for light use I would run it the way it is. The other thing is that the engine driven fuel pump diaphram has some leaks in it and as a result the fuel pressure to the nozzels is slightly lessed then ideal, thus results in a lowered top speed. The manual says the rig should do 28mph, I have only had it up around 18mph, and that always seemed fast enough.
The vehicle is in Nome Alaska, there are no roads to Nome, so the only way to trans port the vehicle is by barge to Anchorage or Seattle and then to truck it from there. The buyer will be responsible for shipping cost, though I can help arrane it from Nome to a major port on the west coast.
Feel free to e.mail me for more information about the rig and I will respond as quick as I can.

I have a lot of old military parts kits most still in copper lined bag. I was told that the G245 of the top number referred to the Otter. I believe they are fuel pump rebuild kits. If anyone can confirm this send me a message.

I have two M76 Otters and was looking to network with other Otter owners. I am in Alaska and know of the majority of the Otters up here.

there are 3 here 2 owned by the row family the one is a runner the other one is parts gpaa has one at americain creek but it needs a butload of work. I have always liked those rigs but I can do with out the aircraft motor a b series cummins would be nice. the one question I have is how do they steer do they have a varriator like modern armor or do they use brake bands like the m113' always wondered because they have a steering wheel. I'm in Alaska too nome to be exact

Thanks for the reply DDS! I know and have talked with Russell Rowe. I have looked at his machines. His runner is a great machine, he was not interested in selling to me a few months ago. They steer and drive amazing, it is an automatic tranny and steers with what looks like an airplane yolk. the continental is not a bad engine, it very similar to a Volkswagen/ airplane engine. Part are the down fall with these machines as everyone knows. I have an all original Otter with only 700 hours on it and I also have an otter with a ford 302 V8, which has been discussed on this forum. I think they are both awesome. What is the chances of me looking at the otter GPAA has and are they interested in parting with it? I will be back in Nome first week in Oct.

I also own a M76 and live in Knik, Alaska. I rebuilt its undercarriage including replacing the original track belting with Nodwell type. Glen and Zelda Heatherly were the original owners. I had the pleasure of knowing them before they passed on. I am not looking to sell but may want to buy parts, an offroad living quarters trailer, or another complete M76.

There were two brothers out a North Pole with two of them. One was all original and the other had been converted to a Ford Econoline body with a forklift rear end. They had four or six new Continental engines still in the original military crates for them.

The last time I saw the was on the Rex Trail when we towed both of them out about 6+ years ago. The Econoline one lost they u-joints on the drive shaft and I don't know what was wrong with the other one. They went well in the mud out there.
