Gone But Not Forgotten

Seems strange that so few have studied the numbers after all these years. Record keeping was certainly lacking back then and soldiers often came and went without commanders even knowing how many were under them.

I am amazed at the record keeping that did go on. Even with computers and everything in this day and age we still manage to lose people at times. Not near as many but it does happen. Keeping track of causalities from the civil war seems to be a daunting task that would be nearly impossible to get accurate. Some folks did not head home after the war. Would have have been counted amongst the dead? What if they headed west and were killed by Indians or extreme weather, they still might be counted as a causality of war. I find it very interesting and amazing that they kept as good of records as they did.
