Big Boy and the Northern

The Big Boy and the Northern locomotives are on their way to Utah for the 150th Anniversary of the driving of the golden spike.

The recently restored Big Boy locomotive is one impressive sight, to say the least.

Both locomotives have steam piston issues, with the Northern basically along for the ride at this point until the seals can get repacked at Ogden, Utah.

The SP70 diesel loco is along for the ride to furnish dynamic braking if needed. All power is supplied by steam for this trip.

These two locomotives are two of the best steam locos built anywhere in the world at any time. A pure testament to American Exceptionalism.

Just yesterday, I watched a GREAT video about 4014, its 1 1/2 hours long ..and I couldn't stop it 'till the end.

.....and then there was one

If you ever get the chance to see 4014 under steam, don't miss it.
I can remember Walter Dove operating 4501's whistle. Each engineer of every locomotive had a distinct and different way with the whistle.
