Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger
"Mom and Dad" as well as "husband and wife" have been banned from California schools under a bill signed by Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger, who with his signature also ordered public schools to allow boys to use girls restrooms and locker rooms, and vice versa, if they choose.

"We are shocked and appalled that the governor has blatantly attacked traditional family values in California," said Karen England, executive director of Capitol Resource Institute.

"With this decision, Gov. Schwarzenegger has told parents that their values are irrelevant. Many parents will have no choice but to pull their children out of the public schools that have now become sexualized indoctrination centers."
"Arnold Schwarzenegger has delivered young children into the hands of those who will introduce them to alternative sexual lifestyles," said Randy Thomasson, president of Campaign for Children and Families, which worked to defeat the plans. "This means children as young as five years old will be mentally molested in school classrooms.
"Shame on Schwarzenegger and the Democrat politicians for ensuring that every California school becomes a homosexual-bisexual-transsexual indoctrination center," he said.
Analysts have warned that schools across the nation will be impacted by the decision, since textbook publishers must cater to their largest purchaser, which often is California, and they will be unlikely to go to the expense of having a separate edition for other states.

The bills signed by Schwarzenegger include SB777, which bans anything in public schools that could be interpreted as negative toward homosexuality, bisexuality and other alternative lifestyle choices.

There are no similar protections for students with traditional or conservative lifestyles and beliefs, however.
"SB 777 will result in reverse discrimination against students with religious and traditional family values," said Meredith Turney, legislative liaison for Capitol Resource Institute. "These students have lost their voice as the direct result of Gov. Schwarzenegger's unbelievable decision. The terms 'mom and dad' or 'husband and wife' could promote discrimination against homosexuals if a same-sex couple is not also featured.

"Parents want the assurance that when their children go to school they will learn the fundamentals of reading, writing and arithmetic – not social indoctrination regarding alternative sexual lifestyles. Now that SB777 is law, schools will in fact become indoctrination centers for sexual experimentation," she said.

Also signed was AB394, which targets parents and teachers for such indoctrination through "anti-harassment" training, CCF said. Schwarzenegger had vetoed almost identical provisions a year ago, saying existing state law already provided for penalties for discrimination.

"We had hoped that the governor would once again veto this outrageous legislation but he obviously decided to side with the out-of-touch extremists that control the legislature. This law does not reflect the true values of the average Californian," said England. "True leadership means standing up for what is true and right."

Thomasson said SB777 prohibits any "instruction" or school-sponsored "activity" that "promotes a discriminatory bias" against "gender" – the bill's definition includes cross-dressing and sex changes – as well as "sexual orientation."

"Because no textbook or instruction in California public schools currently disparages transsexuality, bisexuality, or homosexuality, the practical effect of SB777 will be to require positive portrayals of these sexual lifestyles at every government-operated school," CCF noted.

Offenders will face the wrath of the state Department of Education, up to and including lawsuits.

CCF noted that now on a banned list will be any text, reference or teaching aid that portrays marriage as only between a man and woman, materials that say people are born male or female (and not in between), sources that fail to include a variety of transsexual, bisexual and homosexual historical figures, and sex education materials that fail to offer the option of sex changes.

Further, homecoming kings now can be either male or female – as can homecoming queens, and students, whether male or female, must be allowed to use the restroom and locker room corresponding to the sex with which they choose to identify.

AB394 promotes the same issues through state-funded publications, postings, curricula and handouts to students, parents and teachers.

It also creates the circumstances where a parent who says marriage is only for a man and a woman in the presence of a lesbian teacher could be convicted of "harassment," and a student who believes people are born either male or female could be reported as a "harasser" by a male teacher who wears women's clothes, CCF said.

Thomasson said Schwarzenegger also signed AB14, which prohibits state funding for any program that does not support a range of alternative sexual practices, including state-funded social services run by churches.
Affected will be day cares, preschool or after-school programs, food and housing programs, senior services, anti-gang efforts, jobs programs and others.
Thomasson said it also forces every hospital in California – even private, religious hospitals – to adopt policies in support of transsexuality, bisexuality, and homosexuality and opens up nonprofit organizations to lawsuits if they exclude members that engage in homosexual, bisexual, or transsexual conduct.

"It's the height of intolerance to punish individuals, organizations, businesses, and churches that have moral standards on sexual conduct and sexual lifestyles," said Thomasson, in response to the signing of AB14. "This is another insensitive law that violates people's moral boundaries."

The vitriol over the issue rose to new levels in its latest campaign.

As WND reported, a board member for the homosexual advocacy group Equality California verbally attacked and threatened CRI for its opposition to the bill earlier.
The board member sent an e-mail and video to CRI threatening the group would be buried if it continued efforts opposing the homosexual advocacy.

"The shocking hate mail we received shows that those behind this legislation do not promote true tolerance," said England. "Only politically correct speech will be tolerated. Those with religious or traditional moral beliefs will not be allowed to express their opinions in public schools."
She also cited an informational document published by the Gay-Straight Alliance Network and the Transgender Law Center that already is lobbying for special treatment in the school system.

"If you want to use a restroom that matches your gender identity … you should be allowed to do so," it advises. "Whenever students are divided up into boys and girls, you should be allowed to join the group or participate in the program that matches your gender identity as much as possible."

Further, the groups advise, "If you change your name to one that better matches your gender identity, a school needs to use that name to refer to you." The advocacy group also warns schools against bringing parents into any such discussion with students.

WND has documented a number of earlier cases in which educators, including leaders in California, have taken it upon themselves to promote a homosexual lifestyle to children under their charge.

WND reported California Superintendent of Public Instruction Jack O'Connell, under whose supervision hundreds of thousands of children are being educated, has used his state position and taxpayer-funded stationery to praise a "gay" pride event used in the past to expose children to sexually explicit activities.

That drew vehement objections from several educators, including Priscilla Schreiber, the president of the Grossmont Unified High School District governing board. "I am outraged that a person in this high-ranking elected position would advocate an event where diversity is not just being celebrated but where pornography and indecent exposure is being perpetrated on the young and innocent children of our communities," she said. :4_11_9: Can someone please explain to me why hetro's get so worked up by homosexuals. I truly believe it is genetic, so what difference does it make. I dont care if they get married (just not in my church), have health care benefits or whatever. You can't indoctrinate someone to being gay, I truly believe I could be on a desert island for years iwth Boy George and he would never look good to me. End of story.

I dont think you can teach kids to be gay.

I thought this was astounding in a very bad way:pat:

This is from WorldNet Daily:...
Bob, I just finished reading the Sunday Bee (the paper that most closely follows state Capitol issues) and they never heard of that stuff. I asked my wife who is much more a news junkie than me - she hasn't seen anything about it either. Her reply was "typical Republican style reporting. Normally people will observe facts, have a discussion, and maybe come to a conclusion. Republicans start with a discussion of what they want the conclusions to be then manufacture 'facts' to support what they already believe."

Or in this case you think 'Kalifornia' is different from what you think it ought to be therefor you'll believe whatever supports your prejudices.

That's the same reasoning that go us into Iraq. 'They're not like us so they must have WMD's'.
'We must Do Something about those WMD's to Keep Amerika safe!'

Not sure that you can teach kids to be gay, but my wife the school teacher says that the kids show her photos of what they did over the weekend. Many are now experimenting with lesbian and gay relationships. Further she indicates that the sexual experimentation seems to involve more than 1 partner at a time, and frequently. So if there is any concept of right and wrong it is clearly thrown out the window by these kids who are engaging in very high risk sexual practices and (according to what the teacher say) spreading diseases around the school.

Further, as a parent of a 12 year old, I want to be able to teach my version of morality, right and wrong, and provide a good example without being contradicted by the school system.

The WorldNet Daily is certainly a 'conservative' journal, it further has some pro-Christian reporting bias to some of its stories. But I've often found that many little details go unreported in most newpapers. And while I will not contradict your wife's assessment, I will suggest that just because the 'style' is fairly obvious, it does not discount the factual information that is presented.

Below is the actual bill. You can see it is now a hate crime, according to California law to discuss same sex couples, homosexual relations, etc with a child and take morality into account. This law also applies to private schools and I suspect that the religious community would have some serious issues with what is written below.

BILL NUMBER: SB 777 INTRODUCED
BILL TEXT

An act to amend Sections 200, 220, 235, 260, 51500, 51501, 60044,

LEGISLATIVE COUNSEL'S DIGEST

SB 777, as introduced, Kuehl. Discrimination.
Existing law states that it is the policy of the state to afford
equal rights and opportunities to all persons in the public or
private elementary and secondary schools and postsecondary
educational institutions of the state regardless of their sex, ethnic
group identification, race, national origin, religion, or mental or
physical disability and prohibits a person from being subjected to
discrimination on those bases.
Existing law prohibits a teacher from giving instruction, and a
school district from sponsoring any activity, that reflects adversely
upon persons because of their race, sex, color, creed, handicap,
national origin, or ancestry.
Existing law prohibits the State Board of Education and the
governing board of a school district from adopting for use in the
public schools any instructional materials that reflect adversely
upon persons because of their race, sex, color, creed, handicap,
national origin, or ancestry.
This bill would revise the list of prohibited bases of
discrimination and the kinds of prohibited instruction, activities,
and instructional materials and instead, would refer to disability,
gender, nationality, race or ethnicity, religion, sexual orientation,
or any other characteristic contained in the definition of hate
crimes that is contained in the Penal Code. The bill would define
disability, gender, nationality, race or ethnicity, religion, and
sexual orientation for this purpose.

Bob when they presented these 'facts' I think they made them up. If you have more persuasive facts, ie provisions that were really enacted into law, then I would like to see them.

The only related issue I've noticed is the Governor VETOED a controversial same-sex marriage bill. Why didn't they mention it? That's certainly on-topic within the issues discussed in your article.

From the standpoint of a fundamental Christian (I am Catholic, not a fundamentalist) teaching children that homosexuality is right would be akin to mentally molesting them. From the perspective of my religion, the act of homosexuality is a grave sin, but the sinners are to be welcomed into the church so long as they live a chaste lifestyle. My daughter attends a Catholic school, not nearly as strict as the fundamentalist Christian schools, and her school would definitely be in violation of this law based on some of the text books I've look through. I do not think it is reasonable for a government to make a law that prevents me from practicing my religion, in fact it strikes me that there is a Constitutional amendment stating exactly that. But this law does, in fact, prevent religious schools from teaching that homosexuality is wrong.

I consider the Catholic Church the original fundamintalist. My chruch the United Church of Christ is so liberal our church just had a big split over allowing gays to be married on the alter. err, big problem, the Bible says that is an abomination, so I cannot directly support it. but I kinda liken it to being possed by evil spirits, now we know it was mental illness, being gay might be something like that, a genetic disposition. But I always believe in erring on the side of tolerance. so live and let live. Our kids will not fall for it.

I consider the Catholic Church the original fundamintalist.
There are a lot of folks who misunderstand the Catholics, as per the late Archbishop Fulton Sheen: There are not over a hundred people in the United States who hate the Catholic Church. There are millions, however, who hate what they wrongly believe to be the Catholic Church.

However this issue in California is one where the State is telling/mandating what cannot be said in PRIVATE schools. The law prevents teachers from teaching the theology of their church. It's not a Catholic issue, it affects all religions that have schools within the state of California.
Amendment I, US Constitution

Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the government for a redress of grievances.
The California law states:
No teacher shall give instruction nor shall a school district sponsor any activity which that reflects adversely upon persons because of their race, sex, color, creed, handicap, national origin, or ancestry a characteristic listed in Section 220 .

66251. It is the policy of the State of California to afford all persons, regardless of their sex, ethnic group identification, race, national origin, religion, mental or physical disability, or regardless of disability, gender, nationality, race or ethnicity, religion, sexual orientation, or any other any basis that is contained in the prohibition of hate crimes set forth in subdivision (a) of Section 422.6 of the Penal Code, equal rights and opportunities in the postsecondary institutions of the state. The purpose of this chapter is to prohibit acts that are contrary to that policy and to provide remedies therefor.

THis looks like propaganda from WorldNetDaily.
As previously stated, WND does publish with its bias. That has already been dismissed, but the facts are the facts. I do not see how this can stand a constitutional challenge under the 1st Amendment since it prevents private schools from instructing students in their own theology.

No teacher shall give instruction nor shall a school district sponsor any activity that reflects adversely upon persons because of their...
That seems like a pretty good law. I wouldn't want to live under a government that officially condones derogatory treatment of any citizen. There's a lot of diversity in this country.

I recently manned a table at Science Night in the school where my wife volunteers. The staggering variety of inner city parents who proudly escorted their children to this function was beyond belief. The Hispanic and Black families seemed normal, I've lived around that kind of diversity all my life. But just in the Asian contingent I've read that the school has students who are Hmong, Cambodian, Laotian, Thai, Vietnamese, Chinese (of the mainland, HK, and Singapore variety plus the Chinese-American variety I grew up with) and I think each of these Asian groups was represented there based on subtle differences in dress style and the fact they ignored one another. Indian and Pakistani, Middle Eastern, African, South American - likewise. Among the 'white' people, a second glance (and listening) revealed half the countries of Eastern and Western Europe represented. Narrowing White down to what you might call Real Americans, what I saw looked more like Punk, Gothic, Mr Clean bald n earring gay, Lesbian, Hooker, Parolee, Registered Sex Offender, anything but normal.

That's a neighborhood where new arrivals learn English at night school then 10 years later buy a nice house in the suburbs. It's also unfortunately where parolees are told to remain so they can check in daily. My wife told me one girl can't get anyone to listen to her read in the evening because her mother has 'legal troubles'.

My point is that the kids of all these non-traditional people deserve just as much respect from educators as you and I received. Can you imagine how a little kid must feel if a teacher tells her she should go back to Cuba, or Africa, or that she, her mother, and her mother's companion will soon burn in Hell? Any one of these disadvantaged kids could be dealt a severe blow to their sense of self worth if family attributes totally beyond their control were highlighted as unacceptable. The kid can't change anything, why make him/her miserable?

As I said, I wouldn't want to live under a government (or a church) that officially condones derogatory treatment of any citizen. That's all that new law says. It doesn't 'promote' anything.

it prevents private schools from instructing students in their own theology.
This can't be the first time parochial education and state standards were in conflict.

How has the difference been resolved in previous controversies? - flat earth, plural marriage, creationism, divinity of various contemporary religious leaders such as the Davidians or Oral Roberts, any number of kooky religious theories advanced by various sects. I don't think there have been long and serious accreditation battles over these conflicts.

I don't see this present issue as a unique challenge to Catholic education. There should be ample precedent to resolve it.

The law, classifies as a "HATE CRIME" the teaching that homosexual relations are wrong.

Most Christians, Muslims, etc consider homosexual relations to be some sort of gave sin.

This is not a matter of giving the children of these "non-traditional unions" due respect under the law, it has nothing to do with the children of these so called unions.

This is a simple matter of the state imposing its laws in such a way as to prevent the teaching of the theology of the church. Basically a preacher, teacher, priest, deacon, nun or pastor are forbidden from saying anything like "it is wrong to screw another man in the butt and be married to him" simply because California says so. While that may not be a message that you want your children to hear, I personally do not want schools teaching a LACK of morality. Nor do I think it is legal for a state law to prevent a private school from teaching morality, yet California's new law considers this teaching to be a 'hate crime' under the new statute.
