In lieu of the recent data breach at Equifax, what is everyone doing to safeguard themselves against identity theft?

Personally I have instituted a fraud alert on my credit as well as freezing my Credit Reports with the 4 major Credit Services.

I am curious if others have some good ideas that I have not seen or read about I would like to hear them. This data breach is potentially serious shit and if not taken seriously could cost you dearly.

Putting a fraud alert on your record is easy. Contact one of the big 3 credit services and they will communicate it with the other two. You will also need to contact Innovis as they do not work with the so called big 3 services. This is important. You qualify for this if the Equifax web site is telling you that your information has been comprimised.

Get crackin' This shit is no joke. It could cost you dearly and things can go south in a hurry.

I checked with Equifax and they gave me free credit monitoring/security.

I also have another service that does it too. So now I have 2 credit monitors/security services.

Did Equifax say you are impacted? If you are, someone has your shit.

From what I understand signing up for Equifax's free credit monitoring absolves them of any future legal liability from you. No participation in a class action suit that we all know is forthcoming. I have only read this, not yet found it in writing on their web site so it could be BS.

You may want to do more.

Basically they said it was highly likely that my "shit" has been compromised.

You can go to their website, plug in the last 5 digits of your SS# and they tell you if you are impacted or not. Sounds like most of the world is impacted.

Nope, they stopped that really quick. http://www.snopes.com/equifax-credit-monitoring-class-action/

But it's confusing: Apparently what one CAN'T sue them for is if their "Credit Monitoring" screws up.
For the breech itself you can sue them for.
If that makes sense.

It's also a good Idea to do a freeze at Experion & Transunion the other 2 Credit Monitoring sites.

Thank you. Yes, just to clarify a Credit Freeze needs to be instituted at each of the individual Credit Companies. A Fraud Alert needs to be instituted at only one of the BiG THREE Credit Companies and they will report it to the other two. You still need to do it with Innovis, a small little known credit company that does not seem to communicate with the big three.

Is is no big deal to unfreeze your credit. If you are getting say a car loan, simply find out in advance who the dealership is talks to and unfreeze your credit report with a PIN number that was provided at the time of the freeze.

Downside? If these sites can get hacked, can they also hack the PIN numbers and unfreeze your credit? Of course. Nothing is sacred it seems. :hammer:
