Default 1974 J5 axle thread

Hi,

wheel came off and damaged some of the thread. would like to use a thread chaser to clean up the thread, anyone know size and pitch i should be looking for. also, what is the best way to remove pressure from the tensioner

did you try letting the grease out? sometimes it is stiff. clean it up and you'll see the fitting inside the circle protector.

craftsman tools has a ''rethreading '' kit ( very similar to snap-on, mac, matco, etc... just alittle more reasonable in price)… and in it ...it has two thread/pitch gauges.... and thread files, & rethreaders….. a must tool for working on old iron....

I believe it is 1" x 14 TPI ,will have to double check my die this weekend.

Confirmed at 1" ×14 tpi , for the die size. We have had good luck cutting the 1.5 in round stock down to 1 in", leaving it a little long, threading with the die and trimming the excess. Don't make axles every day, but once in a while.

I've bought new J5 spindles from Minnesota Outdoors before for a very reasonable price. You would think possible but they press right out of the walking beam hubs.
