Cedar siding or ???

We have cedar siding on the house.

Over the years it's obviously darkened. But, it's not consistant. The north face has greyed, the areas most exposed to sun have turned dark brown, up near the soffits is a lighter color.

Is there a way to clean/lighten the boards? When we bought the house, the boards were a nice light color. Now, Mrs. Zoom thinks the dark (and mis-matched colors) make it look dingy.

Thoughts/ideas?

Seriously, father in law up in Vermont has cedar siding. Got pretty bad after some time (years). He went to the local paint store, got a cleaner, mixed it with water, sprayed the siding, let it sit for 20 minutes or so, then hit it with a brush to scrub it. After scrubbing it, hit it with the pressure washer. Have not seen it since this work has been done (he did it this summer) but hear it turned out pretty good.

Come to think of it, I can hook you up on a deal on some cheap labor and send them up your way:yum:

We've been bleaching and power washing the logs on our new house. This process lightens and evens the colors quite nicely.

  1. wet down siding
  2. spray with bleach solution (1:4 bleach to water)
  3. let stand 20 minutes
  4. power wash off
as it dries, the wood lightens and becomes more even, ready for stain.
