Ocasio-Cortez Cheers 20,000 Jobs Lost

Rep. Ocasio Cortez believes it’s more important to verbally castigate Amazon, than to creat jobs for her constituents.

Today’s New York Post ran a piece entitled, “Ocasio-Cortez Cheers as Amazon Scraps NYC Headquarters.” From the article:

Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez took a victory lap on Twitter Thursday over news that Amazon is scrapping its plan to build a new headquarters in Queens.

“Anything is possible: today was the day a group of dedicated, everyday New Yorkers & their neighbors defeated Amazon’s corporate greed, its worker exploitation, and the power of the richest man in the world,” she tweeted.

At one time, I would have dismissed Rep. Ocasio-Cortez as a vapid little child pretending to be a grownup and not succeeding; cute but harmless. Today’s little stunt shows just how dangerous her and her ilk can be. An almost trillion dollar company, once willing to add 20,000 jobs to the New York City economy, is now withdrawing its offer because of the hostile political climate towards it in the city. My fellow RedStater, Brandon Morse explains how it all played out in his article here. He clearly shows how a business, if not appreciated, will withdraw, leaving an employment vacuum, where 20,000 jobs were once expected.

I could say that Rep. Ocasio-Cortez and her tribe of know-nothings and do-nothings, remind me of the Bar Scene in the original Star Wars, but that would be unfair. At least those characters had some idea of what they were doing, whether it be drinking, listening to music or planning their next smuggling operation. Instead, these urchins are more akin to the savage boys in the Beach Scene from Lord of the Flies; mindless, emotional rage that eventually tries to consume itself—hopefully before it destroys what the rest of us have built.

On a little lighter note, there could be another reason why Jeff Bezos really tanked the NYC project. We can all assume that to open a major new plant is very expensive. We’re talking billions, especially in a Democrat controlled, graft ridden berg such as NYC.

My bet is that Mr Bezos is husbanding (pun intended) his cash in order to deal with how shall I say it, issues regarding his domestic tranquility, now no longer extant. Given that pre-nuptial agreements aren’t worth the paper they are written on (so says every ambulance chaser I’ve ever met) and this his financial exposure to the soon-to-be ex-Mrs Bezos is quite large, is it inconceivable that a settlement right around the price tag of his proposed headquarters might be in the offing? Asking for a friend.

As I think I've already said in another post, I find it hard to believe she has a degree in economics. I think she was too engrossed in the prof's leftist koolaid to absorb knowledge of the subject.

I actually have to (partially) agree with her on this one.

The deal that Amazon got from NY was basically a taxpayer funded gift in terms of corporate welfare. It amounted to fleecing the already overburdened taxpayers of New York to pay a private corporation huge amounts of incentives, so huge in fact that they were an economic boondoggle, to open shop in their state.

I oppose corporate welfare of this type (and pretty much all other types too). So from that perspective it was a bad deal for New York taxpayers. It was, however, popular with NY taxpayers because they didn't realize they were being fleeced. So politically she is an idiot for opposing something like this. But from the economics standpoint, it actually does make sense because the amount they were giving away in taxpayer dollars exceeded the benefit the state would likely receive.

"She graduated cum laude from Boston University's College of Arts and Sciences in 2011, majoring in international relations and economics."

It must be one of those courses that you get your degree for having perfect attendance … and paying your exorbitant tuition on time. I'm assured that, with all that education, she pours a really mean draft. :yum:

Bob, I agree with you on corporate welfare and incentives. There's usually only one winner and it's not usually the tax payers.

And there is yet another angle of fleecing involved here...

"A Devastating Loss" - NYC Real Estate Stunned After Amazon Threat To Leave"

In which of course they have invested heavily knowing they would soon flip it to Amazon for a huge profit(s). Personally I hope they do loose their asses on their now misaligned investment..
Those investors took a chance looking for huge profits on what they thought was a sure thing. They lost. Such is life. Showtime show "Billions" had a similar scenario in their plot.

Maybe they can collect from Ocasio-Cortez, the bartender turned economist, for screwing up the deal. :yum:

The DumpsterCrats want their voters young, dumb and full of welfare. The last thing they want or need in that district is 20,000 jobs making 20,000 people self sufficient and taking care of themselves. Socialism does not thrive in that type of environment.
