Mini vacation

It just worked out that three of the kiddies were gone for the weekend with their biodad and we were able to get my neice to watch the oldest boy and the puppies. So I took the rare opportunity to get away with the missus for the night. We drove down to Duluth MN. When we got there, we toured the Glensheen Mansion. If you haven't heard of the place check it out. If you are ever in Duluth its worth the time to go see this place. If you don't know the history about the place, do some research on Chester Congdon. This place was amazing. It was built in 3 yrs in the early 1900's. Up until 1977 the family was still living there until a double murder took place in the home. When you walk in the home, everything is pretty much the same as it was when the place was built. All the same furnishings. The bedroom furniture all the same. Mr. Congdon's top hat and suit still hung in his closet...etc. We took the one hour tour which covers the basement and the first two floors. The third floor and attic are also shown in the 1.5 hr tour. We are definitely going back in the summer to see the grounds and gardens.

After the Glensheen mansion tour we went to the waterfront and toured the maritime museum. Then up the hill to the hotel to check in, go for a hot tub, drink a bottle of wine. The next day we did a little shopping and headed home. On the way home we decided to take the old highway that follows the shore from Duluth to Two Harbors. We had no set timeline. Past Two Harbors, we decided to stop at the old Split Rock Lighthouse. A lot of history there as well. Once we were on the road again we soon came to Grand Marais. It's beautiful there in the summer. We only stopped for gas before driving the rest of the way to the border. We stopped at the border casino for supper and a little(very little) gambling. Once we got going, we passed the US customs. Between the US and Canadian customs is a bridge. Halfway across the bridge I notice that I have no heat coming from the vents. I get into the lineup of 7 or so vehicles waiting at canadian customs and notice my engine temp is rising. We made it through alright and I pulled in anyways to the customs declaration center. I pop the hood and discover that somehow the rad cap had come loose. I had lost half my antifreeze. So I go into the customs declaration office and ask if there was any place that sold antifreeze. Nothing on the canadian side. I ended up going back through the American customs to get to the gas station/border store on the other side to buy a bottle of antifreeze. All good! We head back across the bridge a second time and get in line again to go through customs. It's only a 45 minute drive from the border to home.

Aside from the minor mechanical issue at the border, we had a great time. We are planning on going back again soon.
