There is going to be a solar eclipse in the USA on Aug. 21.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Solar_eclipse_of_August_21,_2017
Even though it will be only a partial eclipse in Arizona, I sent away for some eclipse glasses. That way I won't burn out my eyes when I watch it.
I did watch one years ago with some wielders. They had some equipment that enabled us to safely view the eclipse.

Head over here to Eastern Kansas. We're right in the middle of the Dark Strip!

I had a thread on this a while back
http://www.forumsforums.com/3_9/showthread.php?t=76703

We wrapped about 5 million sets of glasses for the Eclipse.
Most are being sold at Wal-Mart under the American Paper Optics label. We also did some for a college and for Mountain Dew.

I have less than 100 pairs left. Some are slightly dinged on the ear piece but quite functional. PM me an Address and I'll mail some out.

I will see a little more than half of it here.

Better than nothing. :)

Same here. I do not plan to look at the eclipse. I'm sure it will happen just fine without me. :yum:

I did see totality in 1970 in Norfolk VA while in the Navy. The ship happened to be in port at the time and it was amazing.

I have two old passive welding hoods with #10 lenses we'll use. I'll see if I can jerryrig another #10 on my camera to take pictures. Might try a #5 added to the #10 to see how it looks.

I just looked closely at the NASA map of the umbra. My neighbor is in the 100% but my house IS NOT!:w00t2:

Fortunately,I will be a work in Wentzville MO and it is well within the boundary.

If you are not in the umbra, you will not see the total eclipse and will not witness the corona effect. It will still be quite a sight to see but,,,; wear the proper glasses!!!

Some instruction for putting them on safely....

Even a microsecond of exposure to the direct sunlight will hurt your eyes.

First, look down at your feet.
Then install the glasses
Look up
To take them off,,,
Look back down before removing them.

I have bionic lenses and it would take virtually nothing to damage them. I'm being careful.

"Eclipser" glasses are safe
We also did some for "Mountain Dew"
And for "High Point Scientific"

I guess I am an eclipse party pooper. I have no desire to put my vision in the hands of some cheap Chinese glasses that most likely will work, but maybe not? I will be working outside if it is a nice day, but I sure as hell have no plans to stare at the sun. :whistling:

Actually where you are, there is not much to see. The day will darken and then lighten with some shadow over the edge of the sun.

School district: No outdoor recess during eclipse

MECHANICSBURG, Pa. — A Pennsylvania school district says children won't be let outside for recess during the Aug. 21 solar eclipse because of the potential harm to students who look at the sun.
The Cumberland Valley School District sent a letter to parents Monday saying the decision was made after consulting the district's physician.
The letter says district officials recognize that the opportunity to view an eclipse is rare, but the safety of students is more important.
NASA officials recommend viewing the eclipse through specially-made glasses to prevent eye damage.
Central Pennsylvania will see a partial eclipse next Monday sometime between 1 p.m. and 4 p.m. Eastern Daylight Time.

These are the kind I bought: https://www.rainbowsymphony.com/eclipse-glasses-2017/

From everything I've seen these are the safe kind.

On the ear piece, most likely, it should state;

"Conforms to and meets the transmission Requirements of ISO 12312-2 , Filters for Direct observation of the sun."

"Meets the transmission requirement of EN 1836:2005+ A1:2007 (E) for an E15filter for direct observation of the Sun."

"AS/NZS 1338.1:2012,Filters for Eye Protectors. EC Type Examination by: SAI Global Assurance Services LTD."

If it doesn't have one, or all of these, on the label, I highly recommend you replace them with a pair that does.

A once in a lifetime event spoiled by the process of raising "snowflakes."
That and the legal exposure of allowing school children to be exposed to the real world.

I remember here in MO some quasi scientist predicted and earthquake on a certain day. They closed the schools on that day, for fad science.

But think of the children, Francis!! :yum:

I wasn't even thinking in that direction myself --------->> "snowflakes"..

Anyhow, the issue seems to be the same many places.

When I was a kid there was either a total or partial eclipse.
My brother made a nifty little viewing thing with a paper and a pin hole or something to show the reflection because Mom was freaking out about us scorching our retinas lol

Then in the 80s there was a total I think.
My first husband had us view it through a welding mask.

Geeky and cheapy instructions anyone? lol

Well, let's look at the situation closely. In this day and age children, in general, have no respect for their elders or those put in charge. They do what they want, when they want to. They are taught this at home as there are no consequences to their actions. Parents not following through with directions and discipline, giving meaningless "time outs" when a damn good tanning of the hide would be in order. I'm not talking abuse here, I'm talking about the need for a firm hand and firm heart (they must go together) in the child's upbringing. Liberalism has destroyed that like it has most fabrics of our society. How many of these children actually have both parents living at home giving them a balanced upbringing from a woman's and a man's perspective, working as a team?

If I was in charge of those children I close all curtains and lock them inside, as I would have very little confidence they would follow my instructions if they were outside. Not to mention my legal culpability, if God forbid one or more gets injured or blinded. The children lose in this one, because their elders have let them down and not taught them proper discipline and respect, not because the teachers are snowflakes.

Not very often I side with public school system on anything, but they are making the right choice here given the circumstances and potential pitfalls. It is all a testimony to our current lot in life living under the liberal jack boot.

The pinhole camera box as you described is the best if you don'thave the proper lenses.

Caution;;; Not all welder's masks are acceptable for solar viewing.

The cheapest might be to PM your address to me so I can send you some Free glasses.

If the timing is accurate from beginning to end, I'll be inside the building where I work during.
Thanks anyway sweet one.

Use a no. 14 welding mask lens or darker. That is what I have been told by some one on the radio who was asked the question.

No 14 is a bit darker than a No. 12, the most common shade I believe. Limiting the time you view would be advised if you only have the No. 12 is what was said on that radio show..
