Arab Groups attempt to censor Glenn Beck/ABC

Apparently if you have a legitimate criticism of the Arab community here in the US you may face censorship. At this point ABC is not backing down, but given the history of the press, I figure they will eventually.

Here is a clear case where Arabs in America are working against free speech. Glenn Beck has said a lot about Arabs/Muslims and most of it about the FOREIGN Muslim/Arab nations. I have seen several of his reports and they seem to be blunt, but on target and not overtly biased. Sometimes the truth just stings.

I highlighted the last line in the story, which is a quotation from Glenn Beck. Intersting that he does not get Arab/Muslim American groups to come onto his show to reinforce this point.

Arab groups protest Beck's hiring

Three groups are urging ABC News not to keep CNN Headline News personality Glenn Beck on as a "Good Morning America" commentator because they believe he's biased against Arabs. The Arab American Institute, American-Arab Anti-Discrimination Committee and the Muslim Public Affairs Council all said Thursday they had written to ABC News President David Westin about Beck.

"Good Morning America" executive producer Jim Murphy has spoken to a representative of the groups and has invited them on the air to talk about their grievances, said ABC News spokeswoman Jeffrey Schneider. Beck has appeared twice on the show, once together with a Muslim religious leader.

The groups said that Beck _ who's drawing strong ratings with his evening show on CNN Headline News _ has stated on his show that Arab and Muslim Americans are apathetic to terrorism. During an interview in November with Minnesota Rep. Keith Ellison (news, bio, voting record), the first Muslim member of Congress, Beck asked him to "prove to me that you are not working with our enemies."

"That blatant anti-Arab, anti-Muslim bias has been given credibility on a larger news show is something that concerns us," said Arab American Institute spokeswoman Jennifer Kauffman. Beck has said that his question to Ellison was poorly worded.

"My message is clear: Islam is a peaceful religion for over 90 percent of the world's Muslims," he said. "I have urged viewers repeatedly to understand this, while asking all of the proud, peaceful Muslims here in America to take a more visible role in our fight against those who make a mockery of the Quran. I also make airtime available, at any time, to any Muslim organization to help reinforce this realistic, peaceful view of Islam."

You are alredy cencored by your own goverment. You dont see bodies coming home from IraQ on tv. Tv and movies are controlled and under a system of self sensoring. Even cartoons like Beetle Baily is sensored. We read him here, even the parts where sex is the subject, you dont get to read that"over there", it might probably hurt you, even if America is the worlds largest producer of porn films.

Gunnar,
I think you mistake the type of censorship I am talking about. There is some "cultural" censorship here in the US where some things are considered "bad taste" to publish but those things are NOT censored by the government by they are self-censored by our society and it does often show how odd our culture is.

We love nudity and pornorgraphy here in the US, but it must be kept in the back room and not displayed in public. So while pornographic videos are very popular, you must go into a special area that is not in open view to obtain them. I would not consider that censorship. I would consider it our culture that is somewhat prudish. As for the photos of dead bodies and caskets returning from war, those are perfectly legal to show on TV and in the newspaper, but the culture of our society doesn't accept it. However, we do show military funerals with the same caskets, draped in the American flag, and the family members standing graveside at the funeral in our newspapers, etc.

What we as Americans strongly oppose are groups of people who try to stop free speech by eliminating any discussion about their particular group.

The USA if a funny place, first of all, you dont know how to svear.,and if you try, like the old man on the Orange County Choppers it is just a peep and a shadow covering his mouth.
Another thing that puzzels me is children.
When did children become sexy??
On films and videos like AFV nude children are covered with the same shadow that covers the mouth on OCC. Even on babies the "organs" is covered. In Norway nude children is a very natural thing, and not sexual objects.

The Federal Communication Commission regulates images that can be broadcast on TV, including words. There are a handful of words that are generally considered to be unacceptable on broadcast TV but are allowed on cable/satellite TV. Still some TV networks choose to self-censor some words and some images to make them "family friendly" and acceptable to the widest possible audience. In the case of Orange County Choppers, the government is not doing the censoring, it is the TLC network that voluntarily chooses to do it because that is a cable/satellite network and is not a broadcast network. TLC does not have to censor itself, it simply chooses to do so.

Why? Not showing and sending is sensorship, even if it is voluntarily. It is done to please someone who thinks that it should not be sent. If it is arabs or some right wing christian group is the same, still sensorship.

Well I don't know why TLC chooses to self-censor some things but I suppose it is simply to gain a wider audience.

The BIG difference between TLC "bleeping" out a swear word is that we all know what is being said, but when a radical group of Muslims gets someone taken off the air then there is TOTAL censorship and a contrary opinion is forever lost.

I would also suggest that there is a huge difference between an "entertainment" show like American Chopper or America's Funniest Videos and a "news broadcaster" like Glen Beck. Entertainment shows are fun or silly and not designed to actually inform, but a news show is supposed to inform or enlighten its viewers.

Americans seem to dislike stifling the free speech of the news. While many of us may not want to hear some things there is a saying here that goes like this . . . I may not like what you have to say but I'm willing to fight to protect your right to say it.

You're absolutely right. Funny how when "terrorists" show a video of themselves cutting off a mans head with thier own hands and a butchers knife and praising God, everythings fine. However, have a "botched" hanging and have the mans head come off, the people of the same nationality are up in arms over the inhumanity of it all.

Funny about the double standards in the world.

Overall, say what you will about the U.S and our standards, for better or worse, it is the best country in the world to live in.

But man, Norway does have some HOT women!
