Default Free Tucker Monday

first, and most importantly, a big thank you, Mr. Cider Tom

Within 4 hours, 28 minutes from when he emailed me, this tucker was being loaded on the trailer, it is serial number 146009, originally built as a 423 and very soon after being sold it was resold to Southern Pacific Railroad and Tucker rebuilt it into a 425, with a extended body, the RR used it in Northern California for avalanche control and was use to carried dynamite to blast away dangerous snows above the tracks, after the railroad was done, it was sold into private ownership, Diamond Lake, Oregon and finally sold again about 25 some years ago to a great gentleman in Myrtle Creek, Oregon.

Originally painted orange, then Southern Pacific Maintenance away Blue, then Green, do check out the current 3-D paint, the Hydraulic steering ram that was added by Southern Pacific Railroad in the early 50's, otherwise a real time capsule right down to the blade style grouser and Tucker sno cat axle end caps.

this is the 5th serial numbered Tucker sno cat built and first one built of 1946 model year, at the Grass Valley, California shop.

Another very interesting piece of history was found in Durango Colorado, 1946 Tucker that was powered by a Packard 6 cylinder...

From the ALERT to Mission Accomplished under 5 hours. I'm having flashbacks to Air Force Bases when the Alert Klaxon and the rotating lights would start. You pulled off the base roads as the alert crews exceeded sane speed to get to the aircraft.

Would not have wanted to be in their way Monday. Though, watching the in-motion re-fueling going down I5 would have been interesting.

Really glad it wound up where it is.

it was an undercover solo mission, using a purpose built plain jinn tow rig, no refueling required, extra horsepower and couple special features for quicker response and removal of stray cats

Was this one used for the rescue of SP's Spirt of San Francisco near Yuba Gap and Donner Pass after a huge avalanche during the winter of 1952? The passengers were trapped for 6 days.

ah good question, yes it would have been.

I have contacted the Southern Pacific Historical society and to say they were very excited to hear that it exsist would be an instatement, they will be going through their files and photos and will be providing us with copies of everything they have, love the history side of snow cats

well, more was learned today about this very historic snow cat after spending several hours of research.

It was originally sold to R.A. Work of the soil conservation service in Oregon, and was used in March of 1948 to travel the Cascades from Medford to Cooper Spur on the north side of Mt. Hood, Oregon, a 22 day trip doing a snow survey, they recorded record snow depths with frozen ground, later that spring, was the very devastating Vanport flood. The entire town of Vanport was flooded and never rebuilt.

The entire trip was documented and the story was published in the National Geographic magazine later the same year
