It was time to replace the ugly glasspack muffler and pipe setup. Searched threads, but didn't find any real confident recommendations for exhaust parts.
Searched Saab threads to no avail either, and didn't want a teen age turbo muffler wanna-be race car sound either (thought the GIANT exhaust tips are hard to turn down, haha)
Found Steiner Tractor on the net. They had polished stainless high quality show tractor muffler replacements for several makes and models. After searching thru, and matching up with what I thought was a similar displacement tractor (Allis Chalmers model), ordered it up and also ordered up some 1 1/2" polished stainless pipe and a 180 deg. bend from Speedway Motors. Steiner also had the polished stainless flapper cap.
Part number: ACS3168 $117.85 Muffler
ABC3240 $31.80 Flapper
Muffler stats:
1-1/4" inlet length
1-1/2" inlet O.D.
20-1/2" shell length
3-1/4" shell diameter O.D.
12-3/8" outlet length
1-1/2" outlet O.D.
32-3/4" overall length
The muffler had a bottom extension on one side, which is where the mounts were for the proper tractor. I was able to cut that off and sand the edge like it was never there.
Fabbed up a mount that supported the muffler/pipe, and utilized the existing exhaust mount holes that were previously drilled into the side of the cab. That way "NO" new holes. Also installed some mounting tabs to fasten a semicircular heat shield, which is in the works.
Had the local welding/muffler shop (Airport Welding in Snohomish, WA; good people!!) help me with the pipe. I don't TIG yet, and dont have the expander stuff for the pipe. They did a great job with welding the stainless and fitting the new pipe to the old.
Used marine type stainless T-Bolt pipe clamps for the mounts.
Gamble paid off! Overall very happy with it. Looks great, sounds great, stainless is thick and solid, and the cat runs nice with it. As a bonus, the flapper does not rattle/flap up and down at low rpm like I thought it might.
If you are looking for an exhaust for your Imp, I think you'll like it.
