Moving to Philly

So I'm seriously considering moving to Philadelphia and need some advice. Basically, should I do it?

I've done some research and have it all planned out, but I am not sure I am ready to pull the trigger. I have nothing holding me back where I live now, and I have some friends in Philly, so it could be great. But it is a major change.

The cost of living will be 20% higher (from https://www.bestplaces.net/cost-of-living/tulsa-ok/philadelphia-pa/33000)
And a 1 bedroom apartment in the city is $1,200+ according to https://moverdb.com/moving-to-philadelphia/

But, check out some of the free activities in Philly:
Independence Visitor Center at 599 Market Street.
The Liberty Bell Center on 6th and Market Streets.
Independence Hall and Congress Hall at 520 Chestnut Street
The Rocky Statue and Steps at 2600 Benjamin Franklin Parkway
The Love Sculpture at 1500 Arch Street.
See https://www.lifestorage.com/blog/moving/moving-to-philadelphia-pa/

And of course there's the awesome pro sports they have. I love the Phillies and it is so cool that they have a team in all four pro leagues too (Tulsa falls pretty short here!)

I found a good site that helps you rent an apartment: https://phillyapartmentco.com/

And I have movers chosen too:
https://www.isaacsmoving.com/contact/philadelphia/

I found this article https://www.sparefoot.com/moving/moving-to-philadelphia-pa/ that makes a good case for moving to Philadelphia, like the nice four seasons and the 'affordable' housing. "The Philadelphia economy is powered by big and small businesses. Despite rapidly rising prices, real estate is still affordable relative to many other major cities."

So, ss moving to Philadelphia good idea?

I lived in the Phila area for a couple years.

For the "free activities" you mentioned, you can knock those out in a weekend visit.
Traffic is horrific.
Many places aren't so nice.

As for the moving company, beware of some movers. We recently moved my FIL out of the Phila area. Hired a national company https://1stclassmove.com/ It was a absolutely a horrific experience and they are MAJOR rip-offs. Double the price after things are packed, wouldn't deliver our items until we paid the extra price, damaged things but wouldn't honor claims... I'd find a local mover to you (an office you can walk into) and arrange it through them.

Do you have a job or anything in mind?
Do you want/need to live in the city?
I live in W. PA, about 40 miles from Pittsburgh.
We have all the same amenities as Phila (good healthcare, sports teams, museums...) but don't have the taxes, population, crime, traffic and cost of living that Phila does.
We just sold my FIL's house outside of Phila. For the same price, you can get about 40% more house outside of Pittsburgh.

To each his own.

I've never been to Philly and I can't think of any reason on God's green earth why I would ever go there except perhaps for a very well paying job … and I mean a very, very well paying job.

I was born a city boy. I never lived in a city of less that 250K people and most of them were in the multiple millions until I discovered country life. Never going back.

No job lined up but in my profession, I can get one easily enough in any big U.S. city I think.
I want to live in the city.

But your area sounds great!

Go for it. Sounds like you want to make the move. Regret for not going for it later on would eat at you, if you really would like to try it go for it ...but I hope you like snow. :D Good luck.

I was born and raised in a small town of 2600 people. Moved to the city (120000 people) 7 years ago. After dealing with all the low life pos people in the city I was glad to move back out to the country. We're only 15 minutes away but I don't have to worry about having my picture window shot out. Or our vehicles egged in the winter time. Or having someone trying to break into them on a weekly basis. Or having a crack house across the street.

But to each their own. City life is not for me.

I heard a saying one time about New York....."nobody moves there, you're born there"

That said, I've lived in and visited many large cities both here and abroad.

I prefer small, and out of the crappiness of the city.

Don't get me wrong. I didn't mean to say, "Don't do it". I meant to say that I did it and won't be doing it again.

If it's what your heart desires, go for it. When I was a lot, lot younger I always swore that when I was old and wrinkled I would never be sitting in my rocker on the front porch saying to myself that I wished that I'd done this or that when I was younger. Okay, I didn't get it all done but you can bet that I checked a whole lot of boxes. Going to Philly is not exactly a "follow your dream" situation but you don't want to be sitting in that rocker 40 years from now regretting it.
