I would love to employ ( copy sounds wrong),... like the placement of the hyd. tank, air to air plumbing,.. this one has a different exh. man./turbo set-up... than yours,... thanks scott, :weneedpic:thumbup:

I see you have a belt driven hyd. pump, did your engine have the option of a gear driven power steering pump mounted to the r/s of timing gear housing,.. thx again,...

………. so, today...…. was ''lighten the load'' day , ( so my poor old jd24 can lift it /lol),.. and remove the ''truck'' stuff,.... found out where the ''blue smoke'' in video , of engine, was coming from.... the turbo was trying to eat itself. and one of the oil filters spun off with the ''thimble''.... lucky it hadn't fallen off … addition to list...

Those are great motors for any style cat , I installed the big brother 6cyl (non turbo) to this motor in my muskeg, It has been trouble free, and the trans cable shift linkage was easy to adapt into the new cab. The ability to clock the starter allowed for a tight squeeze into the tunnel. Wish more popped up locally, I would love to put one in a J5.

….. I totally agree,... Isuzu makes one of the toughest engines on the market. ive got some customers with Isuzu's, Kobelco's, etc.... they do nothing to them, I don't think they even change the oil, just beat them every minute.... tough. love the ''oil burners'',... they look cool, sound cool, smell cool, ….oops... diesel in the veins.... post some pics of your Isuzu, thx my man,...:thumbup:

Having no luck with the search for my old thread, ended up going to posts by J5 Bombardier page 7 , " Muskeg Hull Rebuild ". My Isuzu is there, it was a long 5-6 year project.

The electric fan works great , went with an adjustable switch (sensing bulb in the rad fins ) . I have to jack the rad for a pump install on my current muskeg project, the gas 318 will get the same setup.
Keep those pics coming , nice work.

Wow, somewhere along the lines of working on the Argo I missed your thread, now almost want to take a break and watch your install prior to starting mine :)

Not sure where are all the differences will be between yours and mine setup, but I'm planning to put the 4BD1T into my 1544 as well.

gotta figure out how the tranny gearing/axle gearing will work out vs the stock numbers.

Thanks for sharing the helpful info!

Can you add an ether start system?

https://www.amazon.com/KATS-33100-Button-Ether-Start/dp/B000I8XDTY

Something like this?

Today I looked over a Tucker 2000XL with the Cummins. It had that system.

I have used a similar ether setup on my M35A2/3's and it seems to work. I don't trust it, had lots of guys say its not very good for your engine but it still is used by many OEM so who knows. I was just on the mountain and it was -10 and blowing, no fun starting a diesel. I very much want a 2000XL in the future but all the newer cats seem to be diesel. I often see diesel trucks with a generator in the back running block heaters in parking lots when we get cold snaps around here (-30). I don't like the thought of getting a snow covered diesel started on the mountain. Sorry to hijack your build @olympicorange, just curious about cold diesels.

I'm sure one day I'll make it into the cold "Siberia" like temps with the cat, but at this time my plan is use it around the PNW area where we dont see much of very cold temps, and this truck started just fine in the winter while being in the box-truck, even with some of the cold winters we had here in the valley.

If need be, there is always Webasto setup, especially with the Chinese knockoffs lowering the price, those plumb into your cooling system and keep things warmed as needed.

Winter fuel additives in the worst case I guess., plus these 4BDs are Japanese made, and they are a lot better to working in the cold than Cummins in my opinion, at least from my experience in North Dakota winters. Yes, not to steal the thread :)

…. well, it's been a crazy week , frigid /wind chills,.. freeze ups... fun times.. o.k. , no worries...all good,... it's the ''octane VS. cetane '' thing,... but it all boils down to ;,... application, environment, knowledge, usage, priorities, equipment, etc…
what you have to work with, what makes the most sense, ''bang for the buck'', ease of effort, convenience, what works best for your situation, etc... ether is never good for any kind of engine, used as a last resort. ambient temps. dictate the situation of start ups,.. figuring out the combination of assists is key. nice to have a genset at the mountain cabin to plug-in the engine heater, ( like at the grocery store in places like AK, etc). but then there's the stock piling fuel for the winter; pro's & con's. I hate changing ''fouled'' spark plugs on a nice day, much less -30. we don't have the environmental challenges on the east coast, as on the western spectrum... wish we did/glad we don't ,.. I don't have an issue running a portable generator to warm up the engine heater, throw it in the back of the cat for the next ''cold-start'' , so on & so forth ,.. but to each his or her own,.. feel free to chime in ''all'' … and happy cranking ...lol

We see sustained cold. if you have starting concerns beyond everythingg needing a little more time, snow cats might not be your ideal hobby..... (humor) Generally the only thing I will not do with out is a propane or map gas torch, they suck as they need to be pre heated as well, but once they are lit everything else will light as well...

you can enrichen with them un lit. preheat and thaw. and my personal favorite providing a flame front for the questionable diesels to suck in. If it is a cat that has a contract it has to start. the 50 hr hobby cats provide a source of entertainment for me in the cold. I wonder if x,y,z will start today. I even wager with my father or who ever else is with in ear shot.

If you have a high hour machine that isn't a good cold weather starter there are many tricks to get them to go. draining antifreeze every night is a personal favorite.
same to motor oil. warm it up in a metal bucket and dump it back into the engine in the morning. if it can start it will. like OO states to ea his own. I enjoy the challenge and day dream of the folks in alabama driving when they get a 1/4 of snow.....while starting my 50 hr junk up.
lighting a fire under them is a PIA, charcoal is best. quick connects on the cooling system are fancy if you have something to hook them to.

…… well said R/S,.. yes, I should clarify,.. ive been speaking solely on the topic of the ''hobbyist'' spectrum. for sure the business/daily/professional world is a whole other realm of importance. plus the pocketbook/wallet should be alittle more substantial,.... we have to do things on the ''thrifty'' side , to maintain our passion/hobby, etc...

….. hello Don, … great suggestion,... the ''slippery'' oil sure does ''crank '' over much easier. and running a piece of equipment everyday, rather than once in a great while does play a roll . well worth the difference in cost of oil . and being able to run it more hrs. between service intervals, etc... adds to the ''pros'' ,...

…. snuck in alittle ''modification'' time ; onto the alternator mounting brackets. had to go with the original ''ambulance'' alt., rather than the Isuzu. the Isuzu unit couldn't be ''bumped'' up any more; maxed out at 74 amps. the 150 amp alt. will handle the electrical loads. had them both inspected & ''spruced'' up on the ''amb' unit.... also started on turbo removal. this one happens to be ''coolant'' assisted cooled, which means scrutinizing the engine brgs. will be even more important....'
