Obama snubs British Prime Minister

UnionLeader.com - New Hampshire news, business and sports - Snubbing Britain: Obama offends a country - Sunday, Mar. 8, 2009
Barack Obama was supposed to make the rest of the world like, if not love, America again. With his charm and sophistication, he would show our cultural superiors overseas, particularly Europe, that America had graduated from cowboy chauvinism to coffee-shop worldliness.

Then an actual European visited the White House, with the whole world watching. Oops. As the British -- or "the Brits" as the President called them during a brief press availability -- might say, the President dropped a clanger, all right.

On their first official visit to the United States, British Prime Minister Gordon Brown and his wife came to the White House bearing the traditional grand gifts. The prime minister gave Obama a pen holder carved from the remains of the HMS Gannet, a warship that once ran anti-slavery missions along the African coast. The desk in the Oval Office is made from the wood of the Gannet's sister ship.

Brown also gave the President a first edition of Sir Martin Gilbert's seven-volume authorized biography of Winston Churchill. This was apparently a response to Obama's having ungratefully sent back to England in January a bust of Churchill lent to the United States after 9/11.

Obama's gift to Brown? A box of 25 DVDs.

Then Obama canceled the customary joint press conference on account of snow and held a small press availability, leaving out more than a dozen British reporters.

The President acted bored by all of it, rotely acknowledged Britain's status as America's closest ally, and left the prime minister to go greet some Boy Scouts. The socially sensitive Britons went bonkers.

Barack Obama 'too tired' to give proper welcome to Gordon Brown - Telegraph
Sources close to the White House say Mr Obama and his staff have been "overwhelmed" by the economic meltdown and have voiced concerns that the new president is not getting enough rest.

British officials, meanwhile, admit that the White House and US State Department staff were utterly bemused by complaints that the Prime Minister should have been granted full-blown press conference and a formal dinner, as has been customary. They concede that Obama aides seemed unfamiliar with the expectations that surround a major visit by a British prime minister.

But Washington figures with access to Mr Obama's inner circle explained the slight by saying that those high up in the administration have had little time to deal with international matters, let alone the diplomatic niceties of the special relationship.

This is how someone who claimed he wanted to "restore the US's reputation" acts?

I just love the gift exchange . . .
But they concede that the mood music of the event was at times strained. Mr Brown handed over carefully selected gifts, including a pen holder made from the wood of a warship that helped stamp out the slave trade - a sister ship of the vessel from which timbers were taken to build Mr Obama's Oval Office desk. Mr Obama's gift in return, a collection of Hollywood film DVDs that could have been bought from any high street store, looked like the kind of thing the White House might hand out to the visiting head of a minor African state.

Did anyone else realize that the DVD's are probably worthless to the Prime Minister?

DVD's are encoded with a "Region Code". When you purchase a DVD in the USA, Canada or nearby region, it has Region Code 1. DVD players sold in our area are set to play back region code 1 DVD's.

Europe is Region Code 2. Players sold in Europe aren't able to play Region Code 1 (North American) DVD's. I'm sure the Prime Minister has access to a RC 1 DVD player but if he just slides one of the DVD's into his bedroom player at 10 Downing Street, he may not see anything.

I'm sure they will be just fine. He probably had his limo stop on the way from the airport to the meeting to pick up the gift. :whistling:

Even funnier is that Gordon Brown is going blind. He is already legally blind.

Seems like the gifts were an after thought. Sounds like it would be good to get someone with a little experience in there to help him out.
