Who wrote this quote? Republican or Democrat

I am constantly amazed at the polarity shift of the two major parties through out history.

The GOP claims Lincoln as the party founder and yet promotes small government. Democrats seem to be tax and spend, making big nanny government programs that expand it yet they are also the party "of the people' Lincoln freed the slaves but more than doubled the size and power of the Federal government. Bush 43 claimed to support smaller government yet doubled it's size and power over eight year rule.

So who wrote this?
Democrat or Republican?

"I can find no warrant for such an appropriation in the Constitution, and I do not believe that the power and duty of the general government ought to be extended to the relief of individual suffering which is in no manner properly related to the public service or benefit. A prevalent tendency to disregard the limited mission of this power and duty should, I think, be steadfastly resisted, to the end that the lesson should be constantly enforced that, though the people support the government, the government should not support the people. The friendliness and charity of our countrymen can always be relied upon to relieve their fellow-citizens in misfortune. This has been repeatedly and quite lately demonstrated. Federal aid in such cases encourages the expectation of paternal care on the part of the government and weakens the sturdiness of our national character, while it prevents the indulgence among our people of that kindly sentiment and conduct which strengthens the bonds of a common brotherhood."

I will never understand how our government could be so foolish (but so warm-hearted) as to compensate the families of 9/11 victims to the tune of millions and millions of USD's. And the victims of Fort Hood. For what? For an act of war? ... er, workplace violence?

How can we set such an unsustainable precedent? What about the victims of Oklahoma City?

And now the victims of the Boston bombing are lining up for a check.

WTF?
.

Now, it's your turn.

This one isn't a republican or a democrat quote, just one I enjoy. It's from 1941.

“Never give in--never, never, never, never, in nothing great or small, large or petty, never give in except to convictions of honor and good sense. Never yield to force; never yield to the apparently overwhelming might of the enemy.”

"Where men of fine feeling are concerned there is seldom misunderstanding." -- This expresses much of how I feel
about my friends here ... but who said it?

I love philosophical insights - they're the window to character. The following are attributed to the same person:

"Winning may not be everything, but losing has little to recommend it."

"You have to learn the rules of the game. And then you have to play it better than anyone else."

Probably true, Doc. Although there is a more political personality espousing Mr. Berra's thoughts. Dang, I thought this was a political quote thread....

Einstein is attributed with the 2nd of the quotes, and I personally think the political speaker plagiarized Einstein in order to sound smart.

Well, damn Dan - are you looking to pick a fight?? :w00t2:
That quote is from the poet laureate of Northern California:

Diane Feinstein :ermm::hammer::hammer:

No need for fighting here, I'm only looking for a little spirited discussion. ;-)

My current favorite Feinism is "Banning guns addresses a fundamental right of all Americans to feel safe."

Know your enemy.

I love that quote from her and do wish you had posted it as a querry.:brows:

Here is my new one;
"If you think health care is expensive now,,,,,wait until you see what it costs when it is free."

P.J. O'Rourke (hope I spelled that right!) Here is one that I would have tattooed on my body somewhere, if I believed
in tattooing. It is another of those bothersome Eternal Truths that upset progressive "thinkers" so much:

“Those of us who have seen violent death up close, who have seen what high-powered bullets can do to living human tissue,
have a horror of inflicting that nightmarish, never forgotten damage on a fellow human being. Perhaps the only more
terrifying prospect is that such a fate should befall us or our loved ones. This is why we, a representative cross-section of
America's population, keep deadly weapons for personal defense.”

Dayum you are good at this.

OK then. You leave melittlechoice. I must give you a tough one
" Access to a waiting list is not access to health care. Delays inthe public health care system are widespread..... in some serous cases, patients die as a result of waiting lists"

Yes it is a bit of a trick question..

A toughie indeed! I've heard those words - somewhere, somewhen - but at the moment the source escapes me.
Let me think about it (or, as Dragonfly Lady says, whatever it is I do in place of actual thought) and I'll get back to you.

Meanwhile, have you sourced the longer one I posted? That one qualifies as "Hard" because it is from a firearms-specific
source - which may be enough of a clue by itself!

I am stuck for the moment but that's because Cathy and I are in and excited discussion about the new busniness plan.

I'l take your clue and offer one.

My quotation is from a government body, not a single person.

That was a good clue! Canadian Supreme Court justices, about 7-8 years ago, right?

Have fun with your planning!!

I'm glad this isn't a contest, you are amzing!
Yes, the canadian supreme court actually denounced the much lauded canaduian healthcare system and considered it "cruel and unusual punishment"

This came back in 2005 when that court rule unconstitutional, a law that forbade private health insurance. back then it took and"average" of 17.9 weeks fromthe time one made an appointment with a GP doctor until they actually got to be examined by a specialist.

Canadians brag thattheir health care is free. infct it costs a wage earner of $35,000 a year about $7,400.00 in health care taxes. Roughly 20% if gross pay. So my earlier estimate of 16% under Obamacare is comparatively low.

Wanna bet our waiting times will go out to 17 weeks?:hammer:

I'm still stumped on yours but here is a new challenge....."A simple way to take the measure of a country is took look at how many (sic,,,,people) want in and how many want out."

If that were true I'd do consistently better with Doc's Trivia game! Nope, just a weirdly wired memory, and w-a-y too
much time on my hands!

Now you're just being nice to me! That quote is attributed to PM Tony Blair, and he did say that in substance, even if his
wording was slightly different. However, as near as I can remember from the research done as the result of a rather
heated argument with the XO of PPC, the first time that sentiment was uttered in modern times was in 1992 and the
speaker was George Will. When I have more time to do research I'll delve further, as there is a niggling at the back of
my mind saying the basic idea was voiced many, many years before even George Will.

Now -- Because mine is one that only folks who read a lot of gun-related stuff would recognize, here's a final hint:
the author's name has Arabic roots.

I do remeber Gearge will saying something like that but it was recent.

As to your challenge,,,even with your clue, I am still stumped.
