1989 Tucker 1442B Sno-Cat with 318 Chrysler and Allison automatic trans. Dana 60s front and rear. Runs good, drives good, frame straight, interior good, has rear hydraulics. Heater works great. Needs the ususal tinkering and cosmetics, been sitting long time. Newly rebuilt carb. There is over $1000. in various new parts that go along with it. I also have all of the original Tucker service manuals. Tracks are in decent usable shape. This is a nice solid, complete machine that could be excellent with some effort. Re: 1989 Tucker 1442B

Hi Dean,

Welcome back! I remember that machine from a few months ago. I think you were wise to get it running and relist it. The very first question I would have is how many hours are on it. You didn't mention it in this post, though in the earlier thread it was under 2,500.

Granted there aren't many photos, and "snowcats always look better in photos" but my impression is that's a lot of value for the money.

The photos are the same as used previously. I'd suggest you take some new ones and add more. The tracks, idler and damper wheels are always a concern, and buyers will want to see those, especially if there are some that are in questionable condition.

Your price is low enough you might consider listing it on ksl.com. Seriously, while it might cost say $3K (a wild guess) to get it shipped to Utah, at $13.5K that's still comparatively cheap. (There is a two hour time difference so you might get calls at unwelcome hours.)

Here's a link to the earlier thread:

Thanks Blackfoot, I appreciate your input. Your correct the pics are 2 years old I think. It has been outside. Now I'll have to go out and wash it up again! I'll take some new pics some time too. I'd prefer to sell it to someone who sees it in person, that way no doubts what it is. I priced it to sell before the winter I hope and maybe break even. I'm a classic car restoration guy mostly and would like to give that one a second chance with someone who will take better care of it than I can. I'll check out ksl too. Thanks again.

Dean,

I completely understand your desire to sell it to someone who comes to look at it. Realize though there really aren't that many snowcats for sale at any one time. The ones that are either overpriced, or in poor condition, or both, can be listed for quite a while. Sometimes they then end up on ebay. A quote from a muscle car restoration friend: "Not all cars at auction are bad, but all bad cars go to auction".

Machines in good condition at low prices sell fast. I recently bought a Tucker sight unseen, and it took me maybe as much as a minute to email the seller I wanted it. The point being, having a bunch of recent photos showing the outside, the inside, under the hood, and photos of all four carriers, and also some shots of grousers, allows potential buyers a fairly decent look at exactly what's for sale. And the same is true for a thorough and honest written description. At your asking price, a smart buyer realizes the "He who hesitates is lost" phrase is applicable. That buyer could easily be hundreds, or even thousands, of miles away. He (or she) may not have the time to be able to come look at the machine in person right away, yet the picture you paint in the listing gives them the confidence to move forward with the purchase.

Re: 1989 Tucker 1442B

Boy its hard to get me in the office for a few minutes these days, but here are some new pics of 1442 taken today. There is over $500. in new parts from the Tucker Dealer in VT, Napa, new VDO tach and fuel gauge/sending unit correct size, as close looking as I could find to originals, 4 or 5 new track belts in the shed, and some old wheel cores. Hours show 2460. I did see under the front end one of those steel tube bump stops is bent. I could take more pics another time.

Re: 1989 Tucker 1442B

I understand - I'm grounded until I get another wheel - to buy a new one, shipped to Canada, it comes to over $1000 CAD :( - a tough buy for me at this time of year

I don't want to hijack the thread, but Holy Cr*p! I was recently quoted $350 for a new standard idler wheel from Tucker, plus shipping. I'm very curious as to how the cost could escalate so much.

Have you contacted the "usual suspects" looking for wheel cores (if that's a cheaper route to getting a useable wheel). If you haven't, I'd suggest the Tucker factory, Track Inc. in Minnesota and Track Inc. in Vermont (it looks like they bought GetSno Equipment, which was Cook's Equipment previously). You might also try Fall Line in Reno. One more possibility would be SnoTrans. I think they have a small inventory of used parts.

Good Luck!!!

the Tucker factory quoted me $640 US for an ice breaker wheel ( no used ones for sale there ) plus exchange ( 30 - 33% ) plus freight, comes to over $1000 CAD - I've advertised on several forum forum pages, and the face book page for grooming equipment - never had a reply - the center of the wheel has been damaged and wont hold a bearing

Re: 1989 Tucker 1442B

Sleddog,
Hey I did not know the wheels (and other parts like the cable I spent over 125. for at Getsno) were so expensive. I'll have to dig out those wheels and take a picture of them and post it. Maybe I can get one to you.

I’m assuming a bearing went out and chewed up the wheel, if so A machine shop might be able to weld it up and machine the center back out for the bearing race.
take a good sample for the dimensions.

Wish this tucker was west coast I’d be sitting in it

To briefly continue the hijack.

If the wheels are otherwise good, steel sleeve the bores. Too big for a lathe? Use vertical milling machine.

Re: 1989 Tucker 1442B

I appreciate the good advice - been considering the machine shop idea if I can't find a used wheel in decent condition at a decent price - the prospects of getting a used wheel is looking up

Re: 1989 Tucker 1442B

sleddogracer,

I started a separate thread regarding idler wheel options, which you might peruse. There is also a difference in idler wheels in that heavy duty machines sometimes used a larger diameter axle requiring different (larger) bearings and a commensurately larger bore in the wheel for the larger bearings. Those wheels are more expensive than the other style. I'd make sure you got the quote from Tucker for the correct configuration.

- I'll have a look at the page you started - I did give Tucker the year ( 1983 ) and model (1344 ), they quoted on an ice breaker wheel - what section do I look for that page in?
