Do you ever wonder how the old timers built them by hand and they lasted for 100 years and all the new tech stuff can't even handle strong gusts?:yum:

A buddy of mine works for a large power Co that has a few of those turbines.
He said last year they found a defect in some of the blades and a fix was attempted if the field.

It ain't just him...these turbines were put in under Bush era incentives.

Ah but was that a Democrat bill that he signed or was that something Bush pushed as an initiative? I ask only because many bills go through during the term of many presidents that are not supported by those presidents. This is especially true when one party controls the presidency but not congress.

When Boone Pickens is trying to get out of the wind turbine generating business, you know that there's no money to be made there.

The Spanish company that makes them is setting up a plant in the U.S. and hopes to improve durability over the ones they were importing. They have a multitude of problems to overcome if they ever want to be viable as an energy source. The subsidies are the only reason they are still building wind farms. It is a lot like ethanol in that respect. If the government was not pumping money into it they would have died already.

Driving through the south of France today near Avignon is a small wind farm with 5 turbines. In the morning 4 of 5 were spinning but this afternoon 0 of 5 were generating power.

That sounds like the ones east of Buffalo on the way to Niagara falls. There are hundreds of them and usually less than 40% are turning.

And just when do you need the most electricity? When there is a high pressure dome, wind speed zero, air temp 90+, rH in the 80s+. Zero Wind Speed is the key point.
