Default Dasha said "Hi" to a boy + wants to go to high school Prom

While Dasha may be a seasoned international level competitor who, by the age of 16, has quite literally surpassed 95% of all fencers in ability and competition skills.

BUT when it comes to boys, she is an awkward teenage girl.

Some kid at school named Jack has started up a conversation with her via Snapchat. This happened while we were in San Francisco. So the lovely Mrs_Bob has been giving her advice on how to respond to Jack. This has been going on for several days.

Today Dasha texted asking for more advice. Apparently she actually took the leap out of cyber-chatting and spoke actual words to Jack today at school

Kids today apparently don't talk in person so they can't function well in social situations???

Dasha is hoping that someone will ask her to prom. The girl is pretty and very very smart. She's also a sweet kid.

Nobody will ask her to prom?

I am finding some humor in all of this but honestly hope she gets someone to go with her. If not then I suppose she can go as part of a group of single girls? I guess I find it comical that no boy is brave enough to ask her to prom.

Jeez Bob, she carries a SABRE!!!

She's too pretty and attractive not to be asked. Some boy will pluck up the courage to ask. Remember that young boys do not handle rejection well and the thought of being rejected is even worse.

We tried to explain that to her.

That boys are terrified of being rejected by girls.

She seems to be shy and reserved until she is with people that she knows when she can be a clown, sarcastic and funny, so that may be another part of the problem. Her focus is often on serious matters like homework, reading or fencing so she doesn't appear to be outwardly friendly. Perhaps she comes off as a bit standoffish to people who don't know her?

Is she cool with you posting pictures of her on a public website and discussing her teenage issues like this? These days it is really best to not have all this "out there". I have girls her age and would be mortified if I found out a coach was publishing pictures and this information on a site that accessible to total strangers.

But I guess if she is on snapchat then no one is really watching the hen house. Social media and teens is a dangerous place. My girls aren't allowed to post pictures of themselves or anything that could identify them on social media - and yes I do check (trust but verify).

Just my opinion though.

PB, I understand your concern but I am old school and come from an era when my business was my business and nobody else's. Likewise, their business was their concern and had nothing to do with me.

Then we come to my grandkids who couldn't exist without social media. If I wanted to I could see pictures of what they had for breakfast, lunch and dinner, what they wore to school that day, what they looked like when they went out on a date or on the town, etc., etc. If you are on social media you have given up the right to personal privacy.

I walk a line with this girl. She is not my kid. I'm not her dad.

I do review her social media, at least some of it. She doesn't post crazy stuff like some other kids. She does post images very similar to, often the exact same images, that I post here. Mostly fencing, college photos, tourist photos.

She is a good girl. Her social media images and posts would not prevent her from getting into a college or being recruited and the vast majority show her to be a good future recruit candidate for both athletics and scholarship.

I just thought this was a fun topic, she is struggling a bit and a little socially awkward, much of which is due to the cultural differences between the US and Russian kids.

Poor thing.
Of course she feels awkward.
Imagine being in a foreign country and wanting to experience what a lot of American kids do (or many) at her age.
If I put my eldest granddaughter in her shoes, I know for a fact she'd feel much the same as Dasha.

And when it comes to boys she is pretty awkward.

She has been sending me video messages for the past 30 minutes asking for boy advice.

One thing that came out of my questions and responses is that tonight she decided that the boy she has been snapchatting with is probably not smart enough to be a potential boyfriend. I kept asking about common interests. She figured out that she likes to read, he likes x-box. She takes Honors and AP classes and he doesn't. She has life goals and aspirations and he is more focused on the here and now.

So its "bye bye Jack" to use her words.

But there is a smart, and even cuter guy that she now needs to figure out how to talk to. They are both in 1 class and they occasionally pass each other in the hallway.

I suggested saying HI in the hallway. It's a low risk environment, if he responds in some friendly way that gives her an indication and it can be continued in (before/after) their common class.

So there is an update.

Dasha is going to the school Prom. But she is NOT going with a boy. She is going with a group of friends. Some couples, some other singles. Dasha was invited to go with a group that had already formed and made plans. They invited Dasha to join their group. So I'm happy. Dasha will get to experience Prom, and she gets to do it in a limo with friends.

Prior to this it was sort of figured that she would take the foreign exchange student bus to the prom with some of the other foreign exchange students ... not really a traditional way to attend. I'm glad she gets to experience it with American students doing it the way American's do it.
