Well its not an actual government imposed tax. However there is no question that President Obama and Interior Secretary Salazar are not in favor of high prices. Both are on the record as suggesting that, to force consumers into 'alternative fuels' we need to have much higher fuel prices in the US. In fact Ken Salazar has stated he is in favor of holding up on drilling permits even if gas prices hit $10 per gallon.

Its all part of the plan. Raised gas prices to that 'alternative fuels' become cost competitive. The problem is, unless they can set in place policies that can't be undone, the fuel prices will drop at some point and all the subsidies put in place to force us into 'alternative fuels' will become counter-productive and uneconomical.

High prices at the pump are putting a squeeze on the family budget as the traditional summer driving season begins. For every $10 the typical household earns before taxes, almost a full dollar now goes toward gas, a 40 percent bigger bite than normal.

Households spent an average of $369 on gas last month. In April 2009, they spent just $201. Families now spend more filling up than they spend on cars, clothes or recreation. Last year, they spent less on gasoline than each of those things.
