I loaded the boiler it was 11. Had some ice forming on the inside of the door glass in the one greenhouse and the torpedo heater had been running. It is now down to 7 and heading to 3 or lower. These next few days will suck and I will need to get some more corn for the feeder now that they have discovered it. Had 24 turkeys on it several times today. They will go back down in the hollow for water and roost in the pines.

-6 now, headed for -10 or so. With little or no wind it doesn't feel all that bad...

You folks should keep it out there. Swirling this powdery snow everywhere at times. We will be lucky to make 15 today. Wind chill is -16 and high gust since midnight was 32mph.

If I had to be out in it for long I would dig out some serious gear as well. Don't plan on being out long today. Load wood and water greenhouses and check the chickens at lunchtime.

We have dropped to1 and they revised our high temp to 10 now. Wind chill is -19 and it sure is swirling the snow around.

I guess I have no right to complain about 19...
Cotton?!?! Really? That's so 1970's...

With the exception of Carhartt Arctic gear, I avoid cotton all I can in the winter. There's a lot better cold-weather materials out there now-a-days.

3 layers (and think 3 W's)
Wisking layer for next to the skin.
Warm layer as your mid-layer.
Weather layer. A waterproof/snow-proof layer to keep the wind and snow off.

They are sure getting dumped on right near the lakes. 2-3 ft. of snow and still pumping off the lakes. I-81 above Syracuse was shutdown earlier. West of me about 50 miles it is real nasty as well. Don't want to go to the casinos right now.

It's a heatwave along my piece of Lake Erie. Right now 8.1F with windchill at -10F. Winds at 17 from the West gusting to 24. I'm staying in the house and making 12# of pot roast for an outing with "The Old Fart's Patrol" the first weekend of Feb down at Lake Hope near Doc's place. Some will hike but the rest will drink, smoke and sometimes joke for the weekend. I'll play QRP on the ham radio and enjoy a Dr. Rum or two whilst feeding the masses.

All I can say is 'YIKES!' I'm sitting here with 80 degree weather but it supposed to drop down to the 50's and 60's this weekend. Still no where near what you guys have.

I remember so vividly having to work in those conditions as a young man ... 40 below wind chill, working structural steel no less. Wake up at 5AM, look over at the wife and kids in the gloom, and ask myself: "Am I going to freeze to death today, or starve to death tomorrow?"

So I'd go out into it and freeze to death.

It taught me one thing for sure: Heat is misery. Cold is pain.
