NCAA just announced they will run the Division 1 March Madness basketball games without fans because of the Covid-19 virus.

Only people allowed will be "limited family members" plus essential staff.

NCAA President Mark Emmert says NCAA Division I basketball tournament games will not be open to the general public because of concerns about the spread of coronavirus.

Emmert said in a statement Wednesday that he made the decision to conduct both the men's and women's tournaments, which begin next week, with only essential staff and limited family in attendance. The decision comes after the NCAA's COVID-19 advisory panel of medical experts recommended against playing sporting events open to the general public.

The 68-team field for the men's tournament is scheduled to be announced Sunday and the 64-team women's tournament field is to be unveiled Monday. Games begin Tuesday and Wednesday on the men's side in Dayton, Ohio, where earlier Wednesday the governor ordered to restrict spectator access to indoor sporting events.

Logically one can presume that ALL of the various NCAA sports will similarly be affected.

WHILE NOT RELATED to the NCAA, USA FENCING is cancelling events:

The USA Fencing organization cancelled (technically postponed) the March SJCC event. It was supposed to take place this coming weekend in Anaheim, CA. While that event means nothing to most people its a BIG amateur event in the fencing world drawing an international crowd.

We are in the last part of the competitive year for the fencing community. Many of the upcoming events will determine our upcoming Olympic, World and National Teams. There are major events scheduled for March, April, May and finally our national championships the first weekend in July. Questions about March and April are already circulating.

Playing in front of an empty house has got to be a bummer.

I just hope Donald does not plan on bailing out the NCAA for all this lost revenue. They are hardly a candidate for the poor farm.

The NCAA just delivered a huge blow to college sports fans by confirming that it will cancel men's and women's "March Madness" tournaments, after earlier confirming that any games associated with the tournament would be played in front of empty crowds.

Don't know about you guys, but the NCAA Tourney would have been a nice thing to enjoy during these days of house arrest.

Here is a breaking story for college athletes.

The NCAA Division I Council voted to allow schools to provide spring-sport student-athletes an additional season of competition and an extension of their period of eligibility.

This applies to graduating seniors, they remain eligible to participate in the next season because this season is cancelled.

Wimbledon cancelled due to coronavirus - where does that leave tennis in 2020?
By Russell Fuller BBC tennis correspondent 14 minutes ago
Breaking news

Wimbledon has been cancelled for the first time since World War Two because of the coronavirus pandemic.

The tournament was due to be played between 29 June and 12 July.

Wimbledon is the latest major summer sporting event to be called off, with Euro 2020 and the Tokyo Olympics postponed for 12 months.

It follows the postponement of the French Open, which was due to begin in May but has been rescheduled to 20 September-4 October.

Guess Wimbledon cancelling should come as no surprise.

The way things are going this year I'm figuring the Major League Baseball season will be curtailed substantially and we will just fast-forward to the World Series this year with the contenders choses by a series of coin-tosses.
