I did not put this in the home improvement section because it could easy be about any trade .

Has anyone looked at what Carpenters are charging for repairs ???!!!:wow:

How can anyone even begin to afford it . Where in the hell do people get off charging the amounts they do ? Half of them have no friggin idea what the hell they are doing . I have forgotten more than most of these clowns will ever know about construction .

It amazes me that we now have all these "specialist carpenters "

An example is finish carpenters, framning carpenters , siding carpenters, residential carpenters or commercial carpenter . When I joined the trade there was just one carpenter . He better know how to do it all or you did not dare call yourself a carpenter .

My cousin is so happy she found a carpenter that is willing to work for only $45 bucks an hour ! ONLY??? I could do more than this clown if I was in a wheel chair and blind .

It ain't brain surgery . You put a nail in a piece of wood and hope it does not bend over on the way in .

Its like calling yourself a building contractor . "IF" you cannot take a house or building out of the dirt and do every job along the way that is involved in the building process , I do not consider you a contractor . A building contractor had better know how to do it all or he ain't no contractor . Thats what you pay him for . To oversee the total project . Otherwise he should be fired and you can just hire people yourself and save 20% .

Does anyone know how to even read a framing square or "cut in" a hip roof without climbing on the roof to take measurements ?? .Anyone know how to step a framing square on a rafter ??

Don't even get me started about stairs .Most carpenters do not even know that all risers in steps have to be withing 1/8 " of each each other and you are allowed no more than 3/8" total variation in the total risers added together .Not much room for error .

Now I don't mind paying for good work done correctly , but I got a real hard time paying big bucks for "some wanna be" to learn on my time .

Now I can take a person off the street , maybe even a monkey and in a week I could have him framing walls on his own . Does that make him a carpenter ??? Not in my book .

Do you have any ideas how many windows replacement jobs I have been called out on because the owner said the guy that installed them said the sliding side was too small and sent wrong from the factory ? I just smile and tell them the window might work better and not fall out when you try to open it , "IF" the carpenter he hired had put the window in with the top up instead of down .:yum::yum:

Ok.... so maybe my underwear is too tight today , but this really pisses me off

I'm going to go find my bottle of rum !!!

I will admit to having to stop and double, triple check when I do stairs but then againI routed all my treads in. What gets me is the guys who can't do diagonal measurements for square and plumb but they are out there hammering away. I know some good Amish tradesman and I know more that have no clue. Same holds true for plumbers and pipefitters.

I once got a price for replacing 4 exterior doors - I'd buy the doors, and do the painting. If you've ever replaced a door, you'll know how simple this job is.

Three quotes, all in the $2,000 range! 500 bucks a door, just for installation. F that. I did them myself. Who pays this kind of money?

Well , Its obvious that some people do . I have a Exterior door to install when I get back to the ranch in Elk city at the local Cafe . No door there now so I have to cut and frame the new opening, jamb and install the door , Install the lockset . Threat proof the hinges since it will open to the out side . My tools and time equals $100 for the total job .
Maybe thats why I am always behind and stacked up with work "if" I want it .

If I had your money and was retired, I could afford to work for peanuts like you do. Is your commercial customer protected for problems that might arise in the performance of your work? Did you pull a permit from the city to perform this work, or will it be done after hours or on the weekend when the city inspectors will not be out and about? Does your $100 include contractor's insurance, performance bond, contractor's license for each friggin city you work in, Commercial vehicle insurance, commercial plates on your vehicle that's resembles a rolling Home Depot of in stock items so you're not wasting time running to the store every time you need glue, shims, caulk, 30 boxes of nails to cover rough and finish nailing, not to mention an assortment of screws for wood and metal studs and enough power and hand tools to open a Sears hardware? I didn't think so. You'll work for $100 plus all the coffee your kidneys can process and a BLT at the diner. In the meantime, some poor schmuck like me is trying to make a living as a legitimate contractor to pay my bills and feed my family, while you retirees go around bitching about us making a living wage, then stealing the work from us just to stay busy and get out of the house. I'm a legitimate contractor who is lucky if I can get 1,000 hours of work in this putrid economy. I fill a need for people who cannot do what I can do, or who choose to have me do for them while they play golf and enjoy life. I charge $75/hour for general trades, and $85/hr for electrical (I'm also a licensed electrical contractor), and if for one minute you think I'm driving a Lexus or BMW like an attorney, you're just fooling yourself. I do what I do because I love doing it, and love seeing the look on my customer's faces when they see a project get completed on time and on budget. To have someone look down their nose at me or my fellow contractors and accuse us of being thieves is beyond comprehension. There is no comparison between what you do and what me and my fellow legitimate contractors do for a living.

First of all you have had way too much coffee this morning . Now go back and reread what I said . Where did I accuse you of not being a legit contractor ? Who in the hell do you think your trying to impress . "If" your good and know what your doing you should keep busy with the customers you have . You and I both have seen many so called contractors that do not know their butt from a hole in the ground . You know it and so do I .

And yes I am still licensed in different classes of construction . No permits are required for installing a door in my county , Insurance is in place and yes I am known as the Home Depot of my area for all the different crap I keep in my shop because its 54 miles one way to the nearest lumber yard .

I don't spent much time looking down my nose that other people cause it makes you go cross eyed so if you think i am or have a problem with that ,then again , go reread my 1st post .

I an talking about carpenters and contractors that have no friggin idea what the hell they are doing ,most of the time .

If You know what your doing than great , go do it for as much money as you can get . I did not get all my money and retire (as you say ) by charging a arm and a leg for simple work . I am not saying you do either .

I am lucky to able able to pick and choose the jobs I take . I know that .

And don't assume that asking a question of me gives you the right to answer for me . 9 times out of 10 you will be wrong .
