ive seen the stuff done here in ak and usually they don't go right down to the rails those v plows run at a high speed. proof with enough speed and weight you can push through any thing
Looks to me as if there might be enough "rake"(?) on the blade that the snow would push down on it, and maybe help maintain contact with the rails? Maybe the faster they go, the more down-force they generate?
