Comey Claim: President Trump gave him direction to drop the Michael Flynn investigation.
The Facts: Even according to Comey’s sworn testimony we know this is a lie. In May 2017, Comey testified that he had never been asked to halt an investigation for political reasons. And in June 2017, Comey admitted when pressed that neither President Trump nor his staff asked him to stop the Russia investigation.
Comey Claim: This president is unethical, and untethered to truth and institutional values.
The Facts: Comey has proven himself to be all of these things, and then some. Comey has leaked FBI documents to protect himself and try to make himself look good in the press. He repeatedly broke FBI guidelines. And, Comey has been caught in repeated contradictions and lies.
Comey broke his own rules at the FBI when he leaked documents to the press. He said under oath he never leaked information to the press and then admitted doing so.
Comey usurped the Attorney General’s authority and broke FBI procedure when he unilaterally called an end to the Clinton email investigation. He broke FBI procedure again when he decided to reopen the case in October 2016. And, now has admitted doing so because of Hillary Clinton’s position in the polls.
Comey lied when he testified that he had no knowledge of the parameters of Attorney General Sessions’ recusal in the Russia investigation.
Comey lied in May 2017 about the scope of the email investigation into Clinton, Abedin, and Weiner.
Comey Claim: He handled the initial public statements around the Clinton investigation correctly.
The Facts: Comey broke longstanding FBI and DOJ protocol several times by publicly acknowledging the existence of ongoing FBI investigations.
In October 2016, he publicly announced an investigation into new Clinton emails immediately before an election, despite having these “new emails” for at least three weeks.
AG Lynch was “stunned and confused” when informed of Comey’s plan to reopen the investigation, and many Democrats called for his resignation.
Comey now admits that he made decisions about the Clinton email investigation based on polling.
