Ralph Story doesn't hold anything against bears, even though one broke into his car early Friday morning in Larkspur and totaled it.
"He was just looking for something to eat; that's what bears do," Story said. "Anyone who lives out here knows there's going to be wildlife here. We learn to live with it."
His 17-year-old son Ben, who usually drives the car, had left a peanut butter and jelly sandwich and a stick of deodorant in the car, which is probably what attracted the bear, according to officials.
Early in the morning, a black bear opened an unlocked car door. After he got in, the door closed behind him, Story said.

I have seen what they do to a camp when they smell food inside. Especially anything with yeast in it. Buddy had a mobile home for a camp and somebody left a loaf of bread in a cupboard. They had also slopped some bacon grease before they left Sunday morning. When we got up there the following Friday night the kitchen was pretty well totaled. It looked like he went after anything that ever had any food near it. Even broke the oven door off to reach spices above the stove.

Over 3,000 people were injured by bears

last year, and many of these attacks were fatal.

As a public service to all backpackers, campers

and other people enjoying the remote regions of

the U.S. this summer, the Forest Service issues

the following notice:

Tourists are warned to wear tiny bells on their

clothing when hiking in bear country. The bells

warn away most bears (brown, black, etc.)--but be

careful because this method doesn't scare away

grizzly bears. Tourists are also cautioned to watch

the ground on the trail, paying particular attention

to bear droppings to be alert for the presence of

grizzlies.

How can one tell if the droppings belong to a grizzly

bear?

Simple.

It has tiny bells in it.
