Ever since I spent an entire years worth of money I saved from delivering newspapers (included the coldest day our city has ever experienced as well as during the worst blizzard our city has ever experienced - schools were closed for an entire month!) and bought me the best Yamaha stereo I could afford, I've maintained my passion as an audiophile. I have a Yamaha RX-V1 receiver with, well, let's say a mid-line set of Wilson floor standing speakers and, when I have to keep quiet, I listen to my music through a set of Sennheiser HD 800 headphones. My music is my indulgence and self escape. I even have speakers around my pool area that are powered by an old Carver Audio M-1.0t amp that is capable of reaching full rock concert sounds outside.

Anyway, enough about my obsession with quality audio equipment. In the last couple of weeks I've had some time while sitting with my father to listen to a bit of music. That got me thinking. Who has the best tone and vocal quality for a female singer? After listening to the highest quality sampling that can be had, I firmly have Sheena Easton and Karen Carpenter at the top of my list. With the high quality audio equipment, I can really tell which singers need "a little electronic help" to sound good and which ones really are amazingly good. To be fair, I do have a high respect for Celine Dion and the 'old' Whitney Houston as well. I'll admit that I just flat out do now enjoy listening to Aretha Franklin or Tina Turner sing. They are sort of like Bruce Springsteen of the female singers; have a following but technically just can't compare.

Clearly there is no "right" or "wrong" answer. I'm asking, to be honest, to see if I can be introduced to, or re-introduced to, some top quality female singers. I'm going to only link to Sheena and Karen Carpenter so my intro to this thread isn't too long. I may be mistaken, but I'm reasonably sure I was at the Sheena concert that is linked while I was in college. I was in the 2nd row from the stage and I was in heaven. She'd just come out of her squeaky clean image to be a little edgy after her time with Prince and I'd be lying if I said I didn't enjoy Sugar Walls from the 2nd row, but I do not consider it a song to demonstrate her vocal prowess. There are so many from Karen Carpenter that I just picked one where she was also the drummer in the song; making it harder to be 'pitch perfect'. I'd forgotten that she referred to herself as a top quality drummer who could also sing.

Write-ins and additional names are not only allowed, but requested. Just remember that I'm looking for outstanding gifted vocalists, not screamers or leads who have to have backup singers at all times. So, with that intro, here are the first two I mentioned and a poll that begs to have write-ins in your posts.

[ame="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YR1ujXx2p-I"]Merry Christmas Darling[/ame] Yes, I know it's July, but I love her vocal quality in this song. Here is another by her, interestingly enough, one written by Paul Williams. Remember him? Did you know he wrote Rainy Days and Mondays, We've Only Just Begun, I Won't Last a Day Without You performed by the Carpenters as well as many top hits such as Evergreen, Old Fashioned Love Song, and many others. I hear he's now been sober and clean for 20 years and a sort of autobiography is in the works about him. Anyway, another Karen song displaying her perfect voice [ame="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PjFoQxjgbrs"]Rainey Days and Mondays[/ame]

Far to many for me, there are a lot of very talented female singers IMO , but i voted for Sheena Easton.

At the risk of screwing up your thread, this Lady in person wowed me like no other with this song, but every other song during the concert was just as pleasing to my ears.
This is not the version i had heard in person with only her singing and no musical background, or the one that was played on the radio that had all the bells and whistles, but all i could find with a quick search.

This is going to be interesting. I suppose that in the end it'll depend on what kind of music you enjoy.

I can't argue with any of the choices made so far but for me the young Whitney Houston takes some beating. That lady had some set of pipes and a range that was God given.

I think the Linda Rondstadt bears some consideration too if just for her versatility.

If I knew how to link music video I'd do it. Maybe someone can help me out.

Hey, there is absolutely no way to screw up this thread (since there is no recording of me trying to sing the female part of a song in the shower) and I'm clearly fishing for more ideas for music to load on my iPod while I sit with my father. The part of absolutely, positively never be out of his removable cast unless he is flat on his back in bed is already starting to eat at him. I think just being there helps, and knowing that it wasn't his fault helps him sleep much easier.

Oh, nothing against the male singers, I just prefer females.

I gotta agree with Sheena Easton and Karen Carpenter, for sure!
Also as Rusty posted, Trisha Yearwood's Walkaway Joe is beautiful.

For me, I think I have to go with Barbra Streisand

Karen Carpenter was pushed incredibly hard (by her brother, who had an incredible ear) to be perfect. She came as close as any to get there.

I have a new-found fondness for Christina Aguilera. Heard her name over the years but never paid attention until I heard her sing in the movie "Burlesque".

An example from the movie.

PG, I've been thinking about this since my first post and much as I dislike the lady's politics I agree with you, Barbara Streisland deserves to be on the list.

Frank,
Mom and Dad were big fans of hers.
We had lots of albums in the house.
One called Color Me Barbra, also lots of Ella, Doris Day,Dionne Warwick etc..
Mom said I used to stand in front of the mirror with a hair brush as a mic and sing along.
One day Dad comes up to me, turns down the volume and says sing it.
I felt embarrassed, but sang along with some song.
He was like Barb!! get in here and hear this child sing!
Mom said.. 'yes, I know she can' :yum:

Yup, all politics aside, I've loved her since I was a tot!

OK Rusty, let's try this.

Everybody remembers Whitney Houston singing what is perhaps the best love song ever written but this is what I remember. It gave me goosebumps then and still does.

Close in capabilities to Karen Carpenter but with a lot more rock-and-roll in her.

I'm gonna be a spoiler & stumble here... What you are hearing as source material has been fixed by the mixer board and audio technician along with some software nowdays.

I wouldn't want to compare a 1983 Sheena Easton (analog recording) with a 2012 Celine Dione (digital recording.)

The comparison is similar to old analog CRT TV (blurry) to HD TV (every zit & wrinkle is exposed.)

Streisand is one performer who uses old 1940 - 1950's RCA microphones exclusively. She gets them rebuilt by hand & they make her voice sound absolutely golden. The mic clips high order harmonics. She used to drag around the corded microphone but I think her last video she was using a wireless adaptation. New digital mics pick up everything.

I was in the business with Ampex, Dolby Labs, RCA Corp. etc.

Anyways, I was listening to Pantone Sheryl Crow and genre all yesterday afternoon.

If you define a pick as "run what ya brung" I pick Lady Gaga - the poor girl has no vocals but sheer determination and strong song writing skills she has assembled several hits and carved a niche.

IMHO, that is the best 'correct' version of our national anthem I've ever heard. I really dislike it when singers try to make it a soul song, blues song, African tribal song, country song etc. I like it when it is simply performed as written. Whitney did a wonderful job of that.
