Singer Gerry Rafferty Dead At 63.
Scottish singer/songwriter Gerry Rafferty, best known for his solo hit "Baker Street" and "Stuck In The Middle," which he recorded as a member of Stealers Wheel, died January 4th after a long battle with liver disease. He was 63. "Stuck In The Middle," the lone hit of his band Stealers Wheel, reached Number Six on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1973 — though many people confused it for a Bob Dylan song because of the intentional vocal similarity.
Stuck in The Middle is one of the best pop songs ever recorded.

I heard this on the news yesterday. Very sad. It seems his later years were not happy, he was very troubled by alcohol and drug problems - leading to the liver disease.

I hope he has peace now.

Love the song Stuck in the middle with you. I knew Stealers Wheel but didn't realize it was Gerry Rafferty who wrote it. GREAT song for sure.
He was one talented guy. RIP Gerry.

I love the horn work in this song, too. I always thought it a real soft, flowing, smooth song...

I heard that he not only wrote all his music, but initially recorded it at his in law's house and mixed him playing each instrument and his vocals into a tract until he had the song the way he wanted it. He was a VERY talented individual. Unfortunately, it sounds like he crawled into a bottle for unknown reasons and never came out. What a loss. Love his music. Do a search and listen to some of his songs that weren't hits. I think many of them are very good.

That sax in Baker Street is killer.. love it..

That was the ringtone on my phone for about half of last year. Even though it's sad that he is no longer with us, I think I'll put it back on for a while. I find it soothing and smooth.

Baker Street... Brings very special memories to me. Somewheres around 77 when I was 16, I went to live with my dad in Chicago IL.
I had a drivers permit from Wisconsin that was a piece of paper with ink written for my date of birth. I changed the 1961 to look like 1957, so when I got my IL drivers license, I had fake ID to be an adult:) It was really easy!
I got a job at Monarch Printing Corporation. After the envelopes were stuffed, had to drive a load of bulk mail through downtown Chicago to the post office each evening. I sware that song was on the radio every time I drove.

and you're right Brent. A lot of his songs that never made it to the top should have.

Hey, about the same age. I have a lot of fond memories of Baker Street too, but for some rather different reasons. :brows::whistling:

Double ditto.

Alcohol really is the curse of Scotland and the Scots. It's the legal gateway to illegal drugs. For Scotsmen of our generation a man was judged and respected on how well he could hold his liquor. Some of us got smart and got off the bus and others, like Gerry Rafferty, unfortunately didn't. RIP.
