HEY All , I just recieved this from Mrs.Seely of Saftey One , after sending her a copy of Vance's early post on snow conditions at Yuba Gap . Can anyone make a suggestion . They need help !!!! Here's her email and our past correspondence to each other .
Allen

Hello!!! What perfect timing on this email coming over to me. We are aware of the lack of snow fall as well and really bummed about it. I am in the process of calling ski resorts, the Forest Service, etc and I have only received voice mail after voice mail. I did speak to a gentleman at Alpine Meadow and he recommended Blackwood Canyon. The phone # for the USFS is disconnected so I have left messages for a few other locations (USDFS and off-highway motor vehicle recreation division).

Do you happen to have any suggestions or recommendations on locations? We are still pushing to keep the event on the 28th, however we know we will have to move the location.

I so appreciate all of your contact and updates with me, it has been most helpful. I look forward to hearing back from you.

Dear Mrs. Seely

Just a update from this end on the snow conditions at Yuba Gap . One of our Members just went there yesterday and this is what he found .

Below is his email post :

Re: Snowcat shoot-out

Hi,

Sheesh!! I'm tired and sore today after a 2fer snowmobile trip in the Sierra. Went out for a typical day trip and did about 50-60 miles in the mountains - there was still lots of untracked snow from last weeks 3-4 foot dump. Yippee. Then on way home we decided we wanted more and picked up some sandwiches and coctail fixins and decided to go to Soda Springs for a picnic and night ride. Plenty of snow in Soda Springs, too and had a great time. After tearing up the meadows and visiting a couple neighbors cabins I was finally ready to head down to Yuba Gap to check out conditions - It was now 11pm!!!

Sorry for the long story but I had to share - Now... the snow at Yuba Gap does not exist... http://www.forumsforums.com/3_9/cid:image001.gif@01C7541E.FBD3C3E0

There are only a few patches here and there.
Pic 1: Road in
Pic 2: Gate CLOSED on road to campground. The campground is still a ways down the road so it is not accessible. The small patch of snow is about the biggest one in the area.
Pic 3: This is the sign at the SnoPark near the TT/Snowflower area. What you can't see in the pic is the dark banner along the sign is actually a "SnoPark CLOSED" banner.

Sorry for the dark pix but you get the picture. We would need at least 4-6 feet of snow at that elevation to make the even possible. We have storms coming in Wed or so but it does not look good IMHO.

Hmm, a bit long-winded this am...

Thanks Al,

I'll ask a couple folks for suggestion and forward on. I have never been to Blackwood Canyon but I'll ask the snowmobile crowd about it. I'm thinking that Iron Mtn SnoPark would be perfect. Problem is that it is over on 88. Many of the snoparks don't have hill nearby - but IM is right next to an old (closed) ski resort.

Castle Peak might work, too.

Maybe Ely. I will check the weather report but for now we have a small amount of snow 12" at 7,000 feet and more up higher. I will call around to get snow pack report from some Ranger friends.

Well,

The wx is getting better!!!

:snow2_smi: :letitsnow: :snow2_smi:

found this:

Statement as of 3:00 PM PST on February 19, 2007

... Snow to return to the Sierra and western Nevada by midweek
with strong winds also possible...

A cold low pressure system is expected to move through the Sierra
and western Nevada Wednesday and Thursday. Winds will increase ahead
of this storm with strong gusts possible in the lower elevations of
western Nevada Wednesday night and Thursday.

While snow levels will start around 5500 feet Wednesday... these
levels are expected to drop to all valley floors in time for the
most pronounced period of precipitation Wednesday night into
Thursday. Snow accumulations up to 2 feet are possible in the higher
elevations of the Sierra by Thursday night with some accumulating
snowfall possible in western Nevada valleys.

Strong winds will combine with the heavy snow to create white out
conditions with considerable blowing and drifting of snow across
the Sierra passes and other exposed high elevation areas.
Motorists should expect difficult winter driving conditions in the
Sierra until the winter storm moves out of the region on Friday.

Mike , I think Safety One wanted to keep it closer to the west coast to draw the ski resort groups from Oregon and southern Cal . I'm not sure if Ely is too far east ???? What about Donner Ski Ranch that backs up to Boreal Ridge on Old Highway 40 . Norm Sailor owns it and it does have a hotel and restaurant on site . He is a really nice guy . Maybe I could call him ?????? It is right on the top of Donner summit so they get the most snow in the whole area . I do not know if they have a big enough area though for the snowcats ,along with their regular Ski crowd ?????

Boreal Ridge is also a good location with more room .

Vance

I'm not sure if the ski areas will want them mixing in... I will call a buddy of mine that is a groomer at Boreal (also coming to the shootout) and see what he thinks.

Royal Gorge is the largest xc ski area in the US and is right there, too. There is plent of room but not sure if the cats would be welcome over there...

I put out a call to my snowmobile buddies, they will prolly have more suggestions to pass on.

Thanks Vance ,
I sent her back and email and told her the FF Snow Cat crew was on the job and looking hard !!!!

Royal Gorge or the Serene Lakes area might be the perfect spot !!!!! Whatta you think ??? Its been years since I was up to Serene lakes and I can't remember if they have anything usable up there or not for a shootout location .

What's the name of that little ski resort right pass the train tracks as you head toward Serene Lakes going out of Soda Springs ???? Is that Royal Gorge ?? It has a pretty steep hill if I remember correctly .......

That is Soda Springs - the first resort on the right.

The other option is Donner Ski Ranch.

Royal Gorge is the xc area that is next to Serene Lakes.

Al, I need some more info from Safety One about the event. The peeps that I'm asking for locations are asking:

- how many cats?
- how many people?
- any other detail or requirements for a location?

I'll let you forward the message to them so we keep one voice. If you want me to contact them just let me know.

I sent a message to Sherri yesterday with some questions, snopark info, and a suggestion to consider Cisco Grove Campground/snowplay/snowmobile area. With the incoming snow they should have good conditions and excellent access.

I have not heard back but I'm going to ping Sherri again, now.

This just in!!!

Dear Shoot-Out Registrant!

(From Alex Marcoux-Safety One)

In case you were wondering, the California Shoot-Out is still a go! While snow conditions may not seem optimum for snowcat demonstrations, we still have an exciting day planned. Yes, you’re still going to be able to test drive the newest vehicles and see them in action. This fun day will also include door prizes and lunch! We’re even encouraged that NOAA has forecasted incoming snow. But whether there’s additional snow or not, the vendors will still be there with their finest vehicles to demo!

Although we have you pre-registered, please plan on completing the registration between 8:30-9:00 next Wednesday February 28, at Snow Flower Resort, Yuba Gap, CA.

If for any reason, you’re unable to make this event, please let us know ASAP! You can reply back to this email or call us at 1-800-485-7669.

Travel Safe!

Are Sno cat's street legal:smileywac ???
That seems to depend on the type of snowcat and the state you live in. For example, the Snow Tracs came from the factory with turn signals, a horn, running lights, headlamps and a license plate light. I drive mine on the street frequently and treat it as a farm tractor with a SMV sign on the rear, never had any problems or gotten any grief, but I do get funny looks :StickOutT

Some states specifically forbid the use of steel tracked vehicls on their roadways.

Vance
02-23-2007, 03:34 PM
Jen,

No, they are not street legal here in CA. But if all the roads are covered in snow then I doubt that LE would give you any grief. If it's that bad then they won't be out looking for infractions...

BTW, Here in Auburn, CA I couldn't even Green Sticker (OHV) my snocat. I TRIED to pay fees at DMV and they fought me and told me this was not a snowmobile or ATV or auto and I would probably get a citation for having a green sticker on there. I'm not sure if they were right or not but I gave up, got a refund for my fees and left.

I still need to contact the Forest Service to get their intrepretation. My only concern is on shared use trails in snowmobile areas.

told me this was not a snowmobile or ATV or auto and I would probably get a citation for having a green sticker on there.Looks just like a four-track snowmobile to me. You might try that.

If you haven't encountered her before - the head DMV office (now at Outer Broadway, Sacramento) always has a little old lady back behind the clerks who has authority to do magic *if* you approach her correctly. Maybe take her a photo on your first visit. She's heard it all - you just need to describe your rig as the same as another green-tag Tucker and she'll probably remember she approved that one 20 years ago when she sat in the same seat as today. There's always a way if you can find a precedent.

Another approach I haven't tried is to enlist the help of your state Senator or Assemblyman, if you have facts to support your case.

mlang2005
02-24-2007, 01:37 PM
All my snow cats have had green stickers, I would start over at another dmv or at least a different person at that office. I have been checked many times while operating in the park and forrest service lands. call it an off highway vehicle, or snowmobile dont mention snowcat as that may prompt questions. I have found out at the CA DMV the less info you volenteer the easier it is stick with stuff they know. my thiokol reg says MAKE:thiok BODY TYPE: sm TYPE VEHICLE USE :off highway good luck

Vance
02-25-2007, 11:38 AM
Thanks for the suggestions, all. It really is odd that I'm wanting to pay DMV fees.. (the sales tax is what gets me). I feel that the green sticker IS appropriate for these vehicles and would think USFS would go that way, too. I'm going to get a ruling from USFS and DMV told me they were EXEMPT (I don't necessarily believe them). I just want to find the clause so I can defend myself against the FS who is likely the only person who would confront me here in CA. I'm willing to pay the 125 bucks or so and 20-30 every other year to keep on the up and up. We want to keep a good image for our "sport".

I'll update as I get more info.

Check out the prior thread on license requirements:
http://www.forumsforums.com/3_9/showthread.php?t=6320&highlight=snow+forest+service+rules

Info that I found researching the Federal Register:

Additonal info for the legal use of over the snow vehicles from the federal register of November 9th 2005.

Copied from the federal register for National Forest Service rules: http://www.fs.fed.us/recreation/programs/ohv/final.pdf (http://www.fs.fed.us/recreation/programs/ohv/final.pdf)

Definition for ‘‘snowmobile.’’
Comment.
Some respondents suggested that the definition for snowmobile in the proposed rule be broadened to include other over-snow vehicles, such as tracked ATVs and grooming machines.

Response.
The proposed rule defined snowmobile as ‘‘A motor vehicle that is designed exclusively for use over snow and that runs on a track or track and/or a ski or skis. ’’ This definition encompassed large vehicles, such as snow cats, not commonly referred to as snowmobiles. However, the proposed definition excluded vehicles capable of conversion to over-snow use, such as ATVs with tracks. Since the proposed definition refers only to the vehicle itself, and not to its use, the proposed rule could be read to allow use of snowmobiles in the absence of snow off routes and outside areas designated for motor vehicle use. The Department believes that over-snow use by tracked vehicles has similar environmental effects, regardless of whether the vehicle is designed exclusively for use over snow.
Consequently, the final rule replaces the exemption and definition for
snowmobiles with an exemption and definition for over-snow vehicles
(which would include snowmobiles).

The final rule also removes the word ‘‘exclusively’’ from the definition, while adding ‘‘while in use over snow,’’ so that the final definition for over-snow vehicle includes motor vehicles that are designed for use over snow and that run on a track or track and/or a ski or skis, while in use over snow. Use by oversnow vehicles may be allowed, restricted, or prohibited under part 212, subpart C.

I checked on Eidelweis and they don't open 'til 7am - Darn. If we are going to be up to Yuba Gap by 830 then we need to leave around 7am from Auburn as there will likely be chain controls to get through.

I'm not much of a big breakfast person but if you want sit down then Bakers Square at Foresthill exit opens at 6am. There is also Flour Garden Bakery for simpler fare (bagels, pastry, maybe quiche?) that opens early and is easy to get to off Elm. I'd vote for Flour garden but I'm open.

Mike, I can give you a ride. Can we meet at the restaurant? I'll PM you my number and you can call me.

BTW, I was up at Yuba Gap and Emmigrant Gap yesterday for a Bday party/sledding/bbq with freinds. There is LOTS of snow up there. Snowmobiles were getting stuck, trucks stuck. I took a little snowshoe jaunt and sunk everywhere up to my knees and some places to my waist!!

I tried to check out the snowflower area and campground road again but this A** that worked for snowflower decided he would close down the entire offramp at Yuba Gap. Long and unpleasant story but I won't get into that. End of the story is I didn't get any pictures (or arrested).

They indicate a webcam at Kingvale, if you can see a .asx file - I'm trying to figure that one out.
At noon Monday its R2. 4x4 w real snow tires, not M&S, - or else chains.

There's a slight chance I might show up to watch the festivities, if it eases up enough to get my little Subaru in there. Given this forecast, it looks more likely that the offramp will remain closed!

FYI, If you have 4x4 with M+S you are okay under R2. To Caltrans the M+S is a snow tire.

The Kingvale camera is fickle. I think it gets overloaded and sometime wont play. Just keep trying.

I've been forced to go back and chain up when I had near-new M&S on a Wagoneer, and then another time with an old flat-side Trooper. The second time, the guy in the yellow raincoat said 'I don't care what you read somewhere - if I can't get a knuckle down between the cleats then you aren't going through.' Maybe they should call that a Hard R-2. I chained up.

He was probably right. We had to dodge a couple of spinouts parked backward in the fast lane, and there were skiers' rigs stuffed in the bushes all the way down the hill.

Here's CT's formal standard. Apparently the on-site guy can interpret it any way he wants.

R-1:
Chains or snow tread tires required. Snow tires must have a tread depth of 6/32" with a "M & S" imprint on the tire's sidewall.
R-2:
Chains required on all vehicles except four-wheel drives or all-wheel drives with snow tread tires on all four wheels.
R-3:
Chains required - ALL VEHICLES- no exceptions

Isn't this amazing ! Last week we were running around trying to find another location to hold this . Now we may be lucky if we can even get there . One thing for sure , The snow should be incredible and DEEP!!!

I'm up for having Breakfast in Auburn . Then we can caravan up to Yuba Gap from there . I also think we should forget the idea of trailering up the snow cats . I will need snow chains for the trailer ,if I pull Yetti up and I have not even tested her yet .

The one thing that may keep me from going is my favorite Uncle is in Critical Care and not expected to make it .They are taking him off life support tomorrow . We are now on watch 24/7 at the hospital .If someone wants to take my wife's and my reservation ,thats ok .I should know more by this time tomorrow .

What time do you think we should meet for Breskfast ???

PS : As of right now Caltans is holding all traffic at Stateline and at Alta on Interstate 80 . Yuba Gap is between these two points .

Aw c'mon guys... I have faith in the Caltrans crew. I-80 is closed right now due to whiteout conditions. Low snow tonight below 2000 ft means my kids will likely have a snow day and I80 will have intermittent closures through the am.

The forecast looks good for us for Wed. Only light snow and clearing conditions. Don't worry but expect chain control to get to Yuba Gap. Just my opinion...

I'll make the suggestion that we meet at Flour Garden Bakery at 6:30 and depart by 7:00. It's basically a coffee/bagel place as I figure we'll have snacks again with Safety One. I'll assume that everyone is gassed up and ready to go at that time. If you have FRS radios or CB, bring them. I'll have both.

Flour Garden Bakery is just south of I-80 at Elm Ave exit. It is in the Albertsons/Longs/Starbucks/Gottchalks parking lot. For Al - it is between 49 and 80 on Elm - can't miss it.

I'll try to get there earlier than 630 but that is not likely as I have to get kids off to school.

Does this work for everyone?

This is going to be a great event. With all the deep powder - we just have to worry that the vendors were able to get the cats to the site. My buddy/neighbor that operates a groomer at Boreal probably won't make it because we have soooooo much snow they will cancel his 'vacation'. I was looking forward to his input.

Ok!!! This is getting serious . I tried calling Safety One to find out if the shootout is still a go . No Answer !!! I left a message and asked for a call back .
I guess at this point we just listen the the road reports in the morning . If 80 is closed I think it will be a bust for going anywhere. Yuba Gap is at 5000 feet . Grass Valley is at 2200 feet . I am at 2000 feet and it is snowing to beat the band here . They are expecting as much as a foot here at my place . This will shut down I-80 for sure . Snow level is suppose to drop to 1000 feet tonight .

Do I have this right?
You're going to a place to play with snowcats.
Snow has arrived.
Snow is in your way to get there.

Why don't you just get in your snowcats and drive there. Heck, you can help stranded motorists on your way (in trade for their gas to get you further down the road).

Okay, I'm on now....

Report from Meadow Vista just above Auburn at 1800 ft:

1 1/2 inches on the ground and still snowing good. From looking at the wx - it'll keep this up most of the night. I expect 4-6 at this elev by morning.

I STILL have confidence in the caltrans crew - as long as it's not blowing like a mf they'll have the road open (it could close overnight) by 7-8am. I don't care if chain controls are at Auburn - I'm fine with the drive. I planned on taking the Jeep but could take the Dodge if we need to fit more peeps. I suggest we caravan in 2 rigs in case it get dicey. I love this kind of wx!!!!

I say game on!!!

If anyone needs my cell number- just PM me. I sent it out earlier. If you have trouble getting to Auburn in the am then I'll come down the hill (I don't expect this).

See y'all in the am.

Okay, here is an update from my buddy who operates a groomer at Boreal and lives in Soda Springs.

Hey Vance,

I finally made it down to the parking lot today. 3' new since Sunday aft. Old 40 has not been plowed since early in the storm set. WB 80 is closed at the moment from NV to somewhere West of the summit. I've talked to 2 different friends one in TRK and one at Boreal and CHP/CT will not let them on 80. Anyway, unless you can chopper me down to Yuba Gap it looks like I am Towle-bound for another day or two. :-(

Attached are some pics indicative of the past 36-48 hrs. Tucker rear kingpin bolt backed out so she is out of commission for the time being. Using the Spryte which is a toy compared to the Tuckie but at least it works.

Please take pics tomorrow!

Thanks,
humpty

Keep in mind that these pics show the snow SINCE SUNDAY!!! There is about 9-12 feet of new snow in the last week...

Well all I can tell you is that the traffic will be kinda bad both West and South bound. If it were me I would be at the base of the mountain around 4:30 to 5:00 am at the latest. The great news is its not Friday or Saturday so you wont have the normal weekend traffic. It really shouldnt be to bad (remember I live in a very rural area and no one gives a shit if you drive in any condition so I judge things diffrently). So buck it up and get up earlier. Carry a bunch of food stuff and drinks (plus a nice big thermos with some fresh brewed coffee). Top off the tank. Have some chains. Carry some wool blankets and a pillow. Other than that have fun. Wish I lived closer.

Just to make it clear - this is pretty much normal for big storms in the Sierra. No sense in trying to get too early of a start because the crews wait 'til daylight to raise the restrictions anyway. There are about 50 big rigs out on 80 by my house waiting for the roads to open. Just like ususal.

Auburn is 5 miles below the current (and typical) closure at Applegate. I think that our planned departure at 7am is perfect. If it's still closed at that time then we'll have to rethink.

I'll be at Flour Garden and ready to go. This really isn't ANY different than the trip I took this past sunday. Only then the controls were 10 miles higher at Alta...

Well its not looking real good for me and the wife to go . I'll get up at about 4:30 and check road conditions . I use to work for "Kingvale" Caltrans as a blower operator and it will be a miracle if they get the road open that fast . "Whitmore" Caltrans just does not have enough equipment in the barn to move that much snow, that fast and graders can only push and stack snow so much . Even with a big "C" frame or Heeling plows they will be limited . Pack it too tight and it just slows the blowers down to a snails pace . They will have to blow it off the highway now and I think Whitmore only keeps two blowers in the yard . Thats a hell of a lot of snow for two blowers and I'm sure "Kingvale" Caltrans has their hands full over the summit too and can't loan any equipment or manpower down the hill to "Whitmore" Caltrans.

Say a prayer Boys .........because it will be a miracle if they get I-80 opened that fast .

Update :
Well Karen and I just returned home from the shootout . It was kinda a bust for us . Mike ,Vance and Eric were able to get out to the test area but after waiting 4 hours at the lodge for the trip up the hill , Karen was cold and my old back was starting to ache so we just headed home . Hopefully the boys got some great pictures and will post them later . The BV206 got stuck on the first trip to the test site and the 6 CamoPlast were not ready to go until about 2 hours later . The 2 tuckers ,I assume, were at the test site but I never saw them again ,so who knows . I think it was just too much snow too fast for the resort to handle . We had to wait about 45 minutes on the access road while the snowblower blew out the parking lot . I sure am glad I left the KT7 home as there was not much parking room avalible . Art Seely and his crew did the best they could for the conditions , but just about everything that could go wrong ,went wrong . Maybe next year ...

When we got home there was a message that our Uncle had passed away so it just ended up being a lousy day .
