All the sudden I am having computer problems. A little balloon keeps popping up saying windows has detected spyware infection. I click on that and nothing happens, it just goes away and a smaller one pops up saying to use spyware tools to remove it. Is this just trying to sell me something. Also my desktop has just changed colors for no apprearnt reason. Other than that I have noticeed nothing else.

Do you have any anti-spyware tools installed?

You have a virus. Probably a nasty trojan horse as well.

Don't buy the product they're offering. They're the ones that put the virus on your PC in the first place.

Please stand by while I find details on how to remove. I purchased SpyHunter to get rid of it but I'll see if I can find you a free resolution.

Is that pop-up saying to buy "Safety Alerter 2006"?

You may also have the trojan "zlob". Do an internet search on that word for instructions on how to detect and remove. Ditto if you have Safety Alerter.

I cant remember exactly what it says, I am at work right now so I cant see it. I will get on line about 8pm tonight. Thanks for the info and I appreciate any help.

Safety Alerter and zlob are both a bugger to remove.

Many spyware and antivirus products can't do it.

I was running AVG for virus protection and Webroot SpySweeper but neither even saw it (nor could remove).

I purchased SpyHunter which got rid of Safety Alerter. You can look but I don't recall finding a free removal tool.

To get rid of zlob, you'll want to download and run SmitFraudFix.

Directions to run can be found in several places. Here's (http://www.geekstogo.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=140685&pid=850657&st=0&#entry850657) one. The directions in Option 1 sound like what I did and worked.

If you can download stuff at work then you might want to download and unzip all of these tools to a CD so you can just pop them in at home and use them.

Hey Devil Dog! Download and install the following 3 pieces of software:
http://www.spybot.info/en/mirrors/index.html

http://www.lavasoftusa.com/products/ad-aware_se_personal.php

http://www.microsoft.com/athome/security/spyware/software/default.mspx
They are all free. Make sure you update the program definitions and then run them one at a time on your system. They usually cure what’s ailing you.

This place might give you some tips too:

Do you have an Anti-Virus program?

Good luck and Semper Fi (and stay away from porn sites!):D

Just for the hell of it, even though I am not having any computer problems, I decided to try the program that Brian suggested. If did find that my computer was infected, and it did clean it. Only down side is that I lost my home page background, and I don't remember what it was, so I can't put it back. Still better than having an infected computer. Junk..

It's very good that it found/fixed it. It's VERY BAD that it was there.

Usually, they use the porn to suck you in and then you download their codec and they own your machine.
