I would never go out and buy an ipad. I won one in a drawing. Here's the deal; We don't have Wi-Fi in the house.
Our internet is brought to us by our cellular provider, via aircards plugged into the desktop and laptop pc's. ipads do not have a USB port for an air card.
We looked at wireless routers, but none on the shelf at Walmart have a port for an air card. If one did, I could take the card from the laptop because it (the laptop) is Wi-Fi capable and could pick up signal that way.
Does anyone have any ideas?

Look for an unlocked MiFi and see if it will work with your cellular provider.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MiFi

Here is one:

[ame="http://www.amazon.com/Novatel-Wireless-MiFi-2372-Unlocked/dp/B0039ZLMK0"]Amazon.com: Novatel Wireless MiFi 2372 Unlocked 3G Mobile Wi-Fi Hotspot GSM For North America (AT&T & T-Mobile): Electronics[/ame]

With the right data plan, the MiFi could replace the "air cards" used on your other PCs if they have WiFi.

Just set up a laptop to share it's internet connection via the Wi-Fi.

Go back to your cell provider. I have a new wireless router/G-4 receiver from my cell provider.

I used to run an air card plugged into a router. It was slow and unreliable. The new piece of hardware is much better.

This is what I have.

Monte,

I think you said once that you were on Verizon. If so they have a card that you can plug in USB and set up a WiFi for up to 5 computers. Don't know how well it works but check into it.

We're on Alltel here. I called their CSR, last night, and they told me that they have nothing of the sort. Apparently, Alltel is behind the ball on some of this stuff. They don't know if AT&T will offer anything like this when they're done with the takeover.

I switched away from Alltel/Verizon for that very reason. I went with Cellcom because they offered this unit and allowed me to demo it for the weekend to be sure it worked at my location before I bought it.

Did you try the tutorial I linked to?

I run an unlocked MiFi on the AT&T 3G GSM network. No problems.
