I assume you will be installing an internal drive in your computer. You will need to get a drive that will connect to an available socket on the mother board. Either IDE or sata. IDE is the fat ribbon cable that old computers had. sata is a round cable with fewer pins to plug in.
If you have sata support get one of these:

I have too of these puppies. One on my main rig - and one out in the living room in my media player hooked to the TV. Flawless! Supports all formats.
Don't worry about all that dvd+ and dvd- All modern dvd burners support both.

First and foremost....what format DVD drive is in your computer? Make sure you get blank media that works with your hardware.

If your drive is newer, it will support most all of the formats. In that case, go with whatever blank media is cheapest....and always make two copies.

RW (re-writable) media is going to be more expensive, and doesn't really serve your purposes since you want to archive your photos and will have no need to erase the disk and use it again.

In order to add to the disk at a later date, you want to find the option for "close session" or "close disk" in your burning software and make sure it is DISABLED.

To be honest, I wouldn't worry about adding to the disk at a later date (also known as multi-session) and I would simply create a new disk when you need to (disks are cheap).

Again....make more than one copy of each disk when your burn it just to be safe.

You can get several different cd/dvd burners free online to burn your pics on . no need for doing anything to your puter . Just download & register . I used to use Ashampoo burning studio , fairlly simple to use . But latelly I,ve just been putting them on a flash drive .

Heres a list of a few .
