My Apple PowerBook died ~ why I love Apple Computers!

About 30 days ago my 3 year old Apple died. The warranty had JUST EXPIRED.

I called "AppleCare" and they talked me through a 'fix.' It worked for about a week. Died again. Called "AppleCare" again. They sent me a box to ship back my laptop. Fixed it for free, shipped it back. Turnaround time was 5 days. The fixed computer worked for about 4 or 5 days and died again. Talked to "AppleCare" again, they suggested I reinstall the operating system, talked me through that process and talked me through a 'restore' from my back-up drive. The computer worked for another 4 or 5 days and died again. Called back to "AppleCare" they sent me a box to return the computer, they replaced the hard drive with a brand new one, shipped it back to me. I had to go through the 'restore from back up' process again and all was good for another 4 or 5 days. It died again on Friday.

Each time it 'died' it did the exact same thing. The computer simply turned off. When I press the power button the computer restarts, starts the initialization process and then powers itself back off before it completes the start up.

So not wanting to mess with a phone call to 'AppleCare' over the weekend, and not having my 'case number' for troubleshooting at home anyway, I wait until yesterday to call back to 'AppleCare.'

I go through the process, talk to a tech, he reviews the case files, bumps me up a level to a product specialist. She tries a few things, reviews my case files, the call lasted maybe 30 to 45 minutes while she reviews things. She comes back on the line after having me on hold (good music on hold by the way!) and tells me she is shipping me a BRAND NEW laptop. The new laptop will have DOUBLE the RAM, it will have a Hard Drive that is almost 4 times the size of my original Hard Drive, and the processor their newest generation and is roughly 200% faster. They are doing this FREE OF CHARGE.

Did I mention that my warranty on my original laptop had EXPIRED

This is one of the many GREAT experiences I've had with Apple Computers. Got to hand it to a company that stands up and supports their products.

You don't get service like that much any more. We might give them a try if this Gateway keeps acting up.

Gone But Not Forgotten
Ok Mr Skurka Apple Guy. We have this young girl that is living with us on a temporary basis. She has an Apple. We have a wireless network. I knowing nothing about Apple finally got it to connect to our Network. But it only stays connected for a while and then disconnects and then I have to mess with it again. Sometimes it will go days with no problems and sometimes it may only be an hour or two. What am I doing wrong? For something that is suppose to be so simple why is it so tough?

But that is good service you have to admit. :thumb:

Very impressive Bob. I've never owned an Apple but with service like that they know their customer base will continue to grow. My dell laptop is just over two years old. If I called them for service no doubt they'd charge me.

I bought it over another laptop because I would get a copy of Vista (in addition to XP pre loaded) once Vista was released. The copy of Vista never showed up, I gave them more time. Didn't want to rush it. I figured being new they were having a hard time keeping up. When I did call they would not give it to me said that I did not call in the allotted time specified. WHAT??? Even though I bought and paid for everything, I had to call them to tell them to ship the copy of Vista. So, like others have stated here on FF, I'll never buy another product from Dell. Their service is the complete opposite of Apple's.

I loved my $3000 MacBook Pro so much I gave it to my son in exchange for his $800 HP. :flowers:

Oh, Apple has been good with my iPhone(s). They've replaced 9 of them so far. Now they claim that they won't be able to fix the dropped call problem until the next version of the iPhone comes out. :furious: Their solution in the interim; turn the 3G part off and only use 2G on my 3G iPhone. Wow, how great. :glare:

Did I mention that I've now bought 2 Verizon phones and am changing carriers after 13 years with Cingular/AT&T? I don't personally like the Blackberry Storm (Verizon's answer to the iPhone), but they at least don't drop numerous calls per day.

My son asked me if I thought he ought to buy an extended warranty on the MacBook Pro I gave him since the Apple warranty is expiring. I told him to hold on a bit and see if he likes it. Maybe since there are others with Macs at his college they can influence him into liking it. I don't think I need to express my opinion of Mac computers. :whistling: I'll just say I've been there, done that, and got the $3000 tee shirt. They must like Bob. In my last 3 years experience with Apple, I've found that I have an extreme dislike of their customer service. Their deal of forcing you to be without a phone (or pay a $30 rental fee) when your iPhone craps out is inexcusable after nearly a dozen "bad" (their term) iPhones. I have experienced untold hours going through the stupid human tricks as Bob described, but my end result was basically 'sorry, you bought a version that doesn't really work. Wait until the next version comes out where those known problems have been fixed and buy that one). If you wonder what I'm talking about, just type "iPhone 3G dropped calls" in Google. You'll have months of good reading.

I'm glad they helped Bob. I'm personally terrified of having to deal with Apple if the laptop I gave my son dies. That's the main reason I think I'll strongly advise against buying a longer warranty. My dealings with Apple Care have been considerably less than pleasant.
