View Full Version : What is your Self-Defense handgun round?

For those of you who carry, what round do you carry most frequently?
For those of you who don't carry (or in the case of Illinois & Wisconsin residents, can't carry) what do you use as a defensive round in your defensive handgun?
FWIW, I carry either a 9mmP or a 45acp. Typically I used 230grain Federal Premium Hydra Shock Low Recoil in the 45 and 147grain Federal Premium Hydra Shock in 9.

99% of the time the .45. I just like BIG holes, & big noise if I can't get out of using it.

If I might....I have in years past carried a .22, that is what I had at the time. I would like to refer to a post from April, 2007 and ask people to be extra careful with anything from 9mm on down. But, that is JMHO

Yes, I know about shot placement, etc. Just something else to think about.

You can make multiple votes if you alternate handguns.

Any gun round be it .22 or anything else small is still better than no gun! I prefer .45 ACP but would carry a .22 if thats all I could get my hands on. A gun is better than no gun.

I carry two guns. I carry a .45 95% of the time (Glock) when I'm out in public. When I'm out in the boondocks I carry a .44 mag (Ruger Red Hawk Alaskan) for the bigger critters.

Every single person I ever saw shot with a .22 always died! It took a while but they always died. Again not my first choice by far. I carry my Glock .45 acp

Several years ago a man was killed at about 150 yards with a .22 short. Shot placement. Purely accidental, the shot was meant just to scare the man. But I would still rather have my .45 or .38.

Yes of course who wouldnt. BUT a .22 is a deadly round. Its not so much shot placement from a .22 that kills although nothing beats shot placement period. BUT when the .22 enters in the chest cavity it just bangs around and around like a pin ball doing all kinds of damage. It takes awhile but eventually they die. Not much they can do in an operating room either. There is just so much hidden damage.

I don't have the .32, but have all others. I've carried all from 9mm up past the top. Generally I want .40 minimum though.

I don't have the .32, but have all others. I've carried all from 9mm up past the top. Generally I want .40 minimum though.I have calibers that I didn't list, and I have calibers that I listed but that I don't carry. For example, I have a 380 carry gun. I dunno why. I carried it in the past a handful of times, might do so in the future, but really don't feel comfortable with the little gun so it sits 99% of the time, in fact its been locked away for at least a year. The survey is to determine what you actually carry or have available at hand for self defense, not what is locked in the safe, and not what you own buy don't actually carry. Consequently when I voted, I did not vote the 380, nor did I vote OTHER. I hope that clarifies things.

DZ, that you?

I'm actually surprised by the poll results. There is a similar poll running at the Indiana Gun Owners site, 45acp and 9mm are in a tie, everything else is languishing in distant last. Their poll doesn't include as many small calibers as this on and virtually everyone there carries so there are more votes. Still I would have expected the results to be more similar.

I only 'voted' for .40S&W and .45ACP since those are what I have in guns configured to carry. I do have a 10mm in an identical configuration to my .45 (Glock 29 is a 10mm and identical to a Glock 30 in size) but didn't vote for it because it's just what is what I carry when going to my remote property.

Yes.
Glock 20
Since I have small hands, had the grip reduced.
Usually not used for normal carry in general public, but when I go out into the woods for a hike.

Carry 40 S&W most of the time, but when at work I have my .38 strapped to my ankle. I usually stick with Federal Hydrashock or Speer Gold dot rounds.

Well, I guess since this is my first post better make it a good one. Was reccomended here by Big Dog, hope that isn't a bad thing . . :rolf2:
Hornaday .45acp 230g, XTP/JHP +p
My usual CC is either a Ruger P345 or a Taurus PT745 for now.
Want a 1911, bought a Detonics Combat Master Yesterday that might fit the need, with some new grips and holster. Seems my poly gun holsters are made to fat for a 1911 style pistol . . . . :bonk:

I have a PT745 also, I really like it since putting Williams Firesights on it and carry it a lot more since. Great size for a carry gun!

How durable is that front sight? It looks like the green plastic insert could be pushed out if snagged by something (lateral force).

Hmmmmm, I don't know. I installed them myself and didn't give it much thought. I do know the green does not protrude from the base. I haven't experienced a problem as of yet.

I prefer .357 Mag revolvers. No safety to fiddle with in a life threatening situation like a carjacking. Just "point, click and ship" the predator to hell in one fluid motion. I think revolvers are better for most women for the same reason.

.22 here; still plan on adding something like .40, .45, or 9mm, just haven't figured out when yet
Of course, off topic of "handgun" and certainly not CC, but the 12gage is still my first gun to grab around here.

Most of the time I carry an AMT Back-up in .380. It's a finicky feeder and won't handle hollow points at all. It's always primed with Glasser's which it handles OK but there is always that doubt in your mind so the S&W 686 in .357 is never too far away. It's usually loaded with a combination of Glasser's and/or 125 grain hollowpoint magnums.

I like the PT745, have the black version, never changed the sights except to blacken the rear and pain the front with Flourescent Yellow, really stand out and much cheaper than replacing the sight.
Blackening the rear sight really helps with the bifocal old fart eyes I got
