I haven't posted many pictures of this project partly because I lost all my pictures when my computer died and partly because it just seems to be going on and on. Kind of like Big Al's project but slightly less expensive :yum:
I got the tracks on and then found out that the springs were shot. That was a minor setback.
Now, I'm working on a plow arrangement.
So here's a few random photos since it's been mostly done.
The second pic shows the hydraulic pump that is mounted directly to the engine. This machine has a 231 flathead 6 which is 2" shorter than the 251. It also has a PTO driving the winch.

Some more.
I had to make a new rear engine cowl. The old one was wood.
Used a lawn tractor seat and had to build most of the area around it.

I'll try to make a list of everything that's been repaired or replaced but I'm sure I'll forget something ...
New differential housing and cover, pinion gear from another diff., new pinion bearings, U-joints, brakes relined, 2 new bogey axles, 1 new drive axle and associated bearings and retainers.
New tracks, tires, sprockets, sprocket outer plates, 1 rear walking beam, springs, track adjusters ( screw-type), bushings and bolts.
New alternator, water pump, rebuilt carb, air filter, gas line and wiring.
Added a tachometer and an electric fan. All usual tune up parts .
New voltmeter, ignition switch, electric "panel", lights.
Built new rear cowl and seat support. Made mounting doo-hickies for gas and clutch pedal plates.
New front plow mount that is supported ( partly ) by the 2 small railroad tracks that run down each side of the cockpit and also by the half an I beam that is above the front bumper.

Nice job Pixie, you should post a picture of before if you still have one what a difference....... :applause:

Nice looking machine. Forum participants set pretty high standards for workmanship. (Or politically correct: workpersonship?)

Pixie, I recall you had some various pictures scattered around when you first purchased the J5s, but they were probably on a couple different threads. Can you post some of the "BEFORE" photos so we can see a comparison!?!

Thanks very much for the compliments, everyone :) but if you saw it up close , you might not be so impressed !!
It might look like a show dog but it's still a mongrel under a nice coat of paint..... :yum:
Thanks to Brad ( Boggie ) for having the parts and putting up with my stupid questions :tiphat:
Here is a link to an earlier thread when I was still optimistic that I could head right out to the woods. :17875:

Pixie, How is the plow coming along?
pixie
02-06-2008, 08:48 PM
Hey, Critter .. how ya doin' ?
The plow is finally pulling together . First, the pin holes thru the plow were cracked and useless. Replaced them after a bit of grinding ....
Then when I welded the ears on the attaching bands, the ears bent towards each other ... ya... i know...only weld a little here and there.... guess I got carried away. :bonk:
Tried to pry them apart but that didn't work so I ground down the insides of the ears enough to make them fit.
Almost have it all together then need to take it apart for paint .... unless it keeps snowing cement here and I HAVE to go out and plow :17875:
Last picture is a 'before' I found.

I have a SW 48 that I'm about done with. When you start to rebuild them there is no place to stop fixing them. I spent over a year making door skins and doing body work before starting wrenching on the motor, tranny, diff bearings, hydraulic pump and valves

Welcome to these Forums, Tracknut !!! A couple of more posts and the forum software will let you post some pictures
Starting with this picture, I can post in the "Adventure and Usage " section !! The :bonk: is almost over :yum:
The J5 is a little beast !!!! This plow has down pressure which is perfect for peeling off the 5" of frozen slush/snow/cement that's stuck to everything :coolshade
Still have a little work to do to make the Fisher plow work.

Woo-hoo! :tiphat: Whatcha got Pix, 2ft of snow there?
pixie
02-08-2008, 10:19 PM
Whooo-hooo , alright :yum:
We had about 3 feet of snow and then warm weather.
In the last week or so we got about 18". 10 of that the last couple days.
The snowbanks are huge on these back country roads. Town had to come move them back with thier giant loader and I'll need my backhoe to dig out the driveway on one side of the house... just too deep and heavy to plow with anything.
