How to get rhythm when you get the SVCHOST.EXE Blues

How many of you get this every time your computer starts up?

A dialog box titled svchost.exe - Application Error

The instruction at "0x745f2780" referenced memory at "0x00000000". The memory could not be "read".

Click on OK to terminate the program
Click on CANCEL to debug the program

Followed by the dialog box titled Generic Host Process for Win32 Services

Generic Host Process for Win32 Services has
encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry
for the inconvenience.

And your computer stops responding completely. You cannot run anything.

This is usually caused after an automatic update in Windows Xp SP2.

Here is a batch file for dealing with the problem.

1. Download this file from http://members.optusnet.com.au/richamcl/svchost/SVCFIX.zip

2. Save the file to your desktop.

3. Unzip the file and bring up a DOS window by going to Start -> Run -> cmd. Remember to leave the two abovementioned dialog boxes alone.

4 Type CD Desktop\SVCFIX.

5. Run SVCFIX.BAT. This re-registers the *.dll files which involve automatic updates. Restart the computer. The two dialog boxes should no longer come up anymore.

For some people, it may be necessary to turn of automatic updates first. Go to "Control Panel" (again, don't touch the two dialog boxes), double click on Automatic Updates. In the resulting dialog box, turn off automatic updates and click on Apply and then click on OK. Now follow the five steps mentioned above.

And for those who end up with SVCHOST.EXE tying up all your CPU usage and grinding your computer to a halt, in which you bring up the Task Manager and see svchost.exe constantly at 99% under CPU usage. This is due to a memory leak. To deal with this, download this file http://members.optusnet.com.au/richamcl/svchost/fix_svchost.zip to your desktop.

Now go to the Start Menu, Click Run and then type cmd. A DOS window should come up. Type CD Desktop\fix_svchost. Now type fix_svchost.bat. Reboot the computer. This should fix the problem and System Idle Process should now dominate the CPU usage in the Task Manager after all the startup processes have been run. For some people, it may be necessary to reboot the computer in Safe Mode before running the file.

Hope this will be of benefit to you.

You could build a heck of a nice gaming PC for what you have to pay for one of those artsy apple jokes.

Quite right. I have built many a PC for various guys and girls. And as far as gaming goes, I have designed gaming PC's on a number of occasions.

Check my website www.pcmeister.info. I don't say "Top Draw Systems - Done Dirt Cheap!" for nothing.

You might also want to download and install these fonts to view the website the way I designed it:
